Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

It may come as a surprise to some that David Sanborn, the smooth-toned alto saxophonist who has become one of the most imitated players of the post-fusion era, got his start blowing red-hot blues charts with one of Paul Butterfield's better lineups. Certainly Sanborn has gone on to slicker, more technically challenging, horizons. This 1992 set is a fairly typical major-label moneyfest lined with big-ticket studio studs, an undoubtedly huge production budget and the obligatory celebrity walk-on (guitarist Eric Clapton). Marcus Miller plays bass and co-produces a lineup filled with studio vets like Richard Tee, Hiram Bullock, and Cornell Dupree, and the Uptown Horns get paid. It does sound like they all had fun. --John Swenson

5.0 out of 5 stars Upbeat and Enjoyable, March 30, 2002

I've heard bits & pieces of several Sanborn albums in the past & must admit I never cared much for his music. So, I was totally unprepared for the thoroughly upbeat & enjoyable music I heard on this cd. With great playing & arrangements by Marcus Miller, funky B-3 backing by Ricky Peterson, a tight horn section featuring Randy Brecker & even a nice solo by Eric Clapton on one song, a five star rating was a no-brainer. There are lots of blues, funky grooves, brass & extended solos with Sanborn "Upfront" on most of the selections while still allowing time for the supporting cast to showcase their talents. As for negatives, I have to side with the anti Bang Bang group. It's not that I dislike the song, it just doesn't seem to fit. Another minor criticism - I have been unable to find the times of each song listed anywhere on the cd. Overall - a very impressive effort.

5.0 out of 5 stars Heavy Hitter Jazz, February 22, 2004
This review is from: Upfront (Audio CD)
Upfront is not your traditional David Sanborn that sold a zillion albums appealing to the milk toast Jazz crowd. This album is harmonically and melodically interesting and intellectually challenging. I don't see the Smooth Jazz world taking to this piece of art at all. This is Picasso. This is definitely for the hard core jazzist and true desciples of Mr. Sanborn. The more I listen to it over the years, the more I love and appreciate it!

5.0 out of 5 stars No need for the fast forward button, September 28, 2000

This CD is one of my all time favorites. You can listen to it without ever touching the fast forward button. I especially like all the brass and percussion used throughout...a fine mix. I'm surprised at the negative reviews for Bang Bang...sounds to me like the musicians were just lettin' loose and havin' a good time. No need to take everything so seriously! The trombone solo on Bang Bang is refreshing to hear...too bad the trombone is such an underutilized jazz instrument. My favorite cuts are: Crossfire, Hey, Soul Serenade (can a song get any[more beutiful]?! ) and Bang Bang.
