I'm a novice mac user and found this book very helpful in my upgrade. The step by step instructions were clear, concise and practical. By following the advice in this book, I was able to upgrade and save my settings with no problems. I also learned how to backup my hard drive in case things didn't go smoothly. Upgrading to Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger: Visual QuickProject Guide

This book would possibly be helpful to a Mac neophyte, but for me, a Mac user for 26 years, it is virtually useless. I had hoped it would serve as a guide to changed procedures and using new features, but it doesn't. I've used 2 of the missing manual series by David Pogue (whom I know: he's a very...

By following the advice in this book, I was able to upgrade and save my settings with no problems. I also learned how to backup my hard drive in case things didn't go smoothly. The section on customizing Tiger and using the new features gave a good overview and got me started quickly. Definitely worth buying and using for the upgrade and keeping around for a quick reference.

I found this book very helpful and easy to follow. The visuals are great and a lot easier to use than just reading pages and pages of words on how to do things.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent foolproof advice: no experience necessary!, May 2, 2006
This review is from: Upgrading to Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger: Visual QuickProject Guide (Paperback)
This book was a great help to me. Upgrading an operating system is a chore and if you spend much time on the internet you come across an endless stream of horror stories. I'm very busy and didn't want to spend any time searching for ways to fix disasters. Though I love web design, the technical aspects of operating systems and the innards of computers are daunting to me and, well, not very interesting. This book was exactly what I needed. In very few pages the author takes you step by step through everything you should do before upgrading, how to back up your current computer, how to choose an upgrade option, how to set up Tiger and customize it for your needs. He introduces Spotlight, Dashboard and even the automator and has good ideas for additional small but helpful software you can get online. His instructions are crystal clear and uncomplicated. Somehow he has just the right amount of smart tips. There isn't one bit of "padding" in this book - he gets right to the point and doesn't waste a minute of your time with chatter or unnecessary information. The process was far from overwhelming with the help of this book. One note: he recommends SuperDuper for backing up your hard drive. If you have Jaguar, or anything less than Mac OSX 10.3.9, you can't use the version of SuperDuper that is on their home page. However, as I discovered, they are happy to send you an older version of SuperDuper if you just contact them. Following the instructions in this book, I was very happy with my upgrade experience. Highly recommended.

This book provided a wealth of information about what to do before you even back anything up. The checklist of info was outstanding and was a great help.

This book would possibly be helpful to a Mac neophyte, but for me, a Mac user for 26 years, it is virtually useless. I had hoped it would serve as a guide to changed procedures and using new features, but it doesn't. I've used 2 of the missing manual series by David Pogue (whom I know: he's a very talented and funny guy in person) but his books, which range about 700-900 pages, go overboard in their detail. I was hoping for the middle ground when I ordered this book, but it's at the opposite extreme. At 125 pages for $12.95, it costs a dime a page, most of which are scarcely worth a penny!
