5.0 out of 5 stars Review of Upland Game Birds by Leland Hayes

I found Dr. Hayes book to be very informative regarding the raising and care of many different species of game birds. I appreciated the information on the difficulties associated with particular breeds, as a guide to selecting challenging or easy breeds to raise.

The medication guide alone is worth the price of the book, comparing dosage amounts and alternative medications for most common ailments.

This is the first book I have found with useful information for the small-scale breeder, as opposed to the large commercial game bird operator.

5.0 out of 5 stars Leland Hayes Upland Game birds, Their Breeding & Care, April 2, 2000

This book is one of the most detailed books in the field and it is a must for every owner of gamebirds. Dr.Hayes and his wife have done much researchh and breeding of these birds. He does not try to give information as to what you should do if he hasn't breed or raised or treated birds of any species. The breeder can learn alot and put it to good use in his or her aviary. Thus saving a lot of expense and time with sick birds. Take care of the birds as described will make you a very smart breeder. Besure and purchase this and other books by Dr. Hayes. Also he provides a great service for online game bird questions on his FREE Ezine. Contact him at Leland@LelandHayes.com Thank you G L. Heywood email frizzlebird@yahoo.com

I found this book very informative and interesting to read. The descriptions, photos and plates are very helpful in identifying the differences between the many species of quail, pheasants, partridges and other gamebirds. You can tell by the author's comments that he has personal experience with these birds and is not just rephrasing something he read (like in so many other books).

The medication guide and disease information is quite helpful and its easy to locate the necessary information quickly.

This is a book I would recommend to anyone raising or thinking about raising gamebirds.

This book makes a significant contribution to the field of aviculture. It contains a wealth of information, useful to both the beginner and expert. No book ever written answers all questions by all readers; but, this one goes a long way. As a reasonably well-educated and experienced breeder, with 40 years of research and avicultural experience, I recommend this book to all, without hesitation or reservation.

I must admit, for the price of the book I was not expecting alot of content or such great information about various species of gamebirds. This book suprised me and has been great! Alot of great pointers and helpful info, plus, wrote from experience, not someone else's thoughts on the matter. This book also gives the author's personal opinions about which species are easy to raise, and also different personalities. I raise gamebirds as a hobby with my kids and this was the cat's meow...thumbs up!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for pheasant fanciers, April 1, 2000
This review is from: Upland Game Birds: Their Care and Breeding (Paperback)
I enjoyed the information this book has to offer. It is written so people of all ages and interests can enjoy it. It is recommended reading for anyone that is beginning to get into pheasants and wants to know about each breed, where they come from, markings, behavior and comparisons. In my opinion the book was too short, Leland Hayes has a LOT more to offer. I can't wait for his next books to come out. I can't say anything more except 4 stars and It is a 2 thumbs up book.

I found this book to vague and not indepth enough toward care and breeding of pheasants. It did not expand on setup nor showed pictures of environments, cages, etc. It covered too wide of a range of game birds and did not focus on specific species. It was more of a description of the various birds, their native ranges, and their behavor and not specifically the care and breeding, setup and daily maintenance of the various speices.

Being an advanced bird breeder, I was disapointed with this book due to its failure to provide sufficient care and breeding information. The author talked a lot but did not have much to say in the way of good useful information.
