At the intersection where cowboy boots meet Converse, where twang ties into tough-minded rock riffs, and country collides with the power of punk, you’ll find J. Charles & The Trainrobbers. To refer to them as country-rockers would be to call up a false impression of laid-back Laurel Canyon dudes lost in a cloud of pot smoke. In fact, the Dallas-based band’s insistent, urgent ... Editorial Reviews

Debut album from alt-country/americana rockers J. Charles & The Trainrobbers. Featuring former members of Sangre Sangre, The Strays, Death on Wednesday, The Queers, and Slowride. Recorded in a non-traditional manner over an entire year with producer and mixer Matt Pence (Centro-Matic, True Widow) the album harkens back to an older era of country music with its strong lyrical imagery. Mastered by Four-Time Grammy Award Winner Gavin Lurssen (Willie Nelson, Elvis Costello, Tom Waits, T-Bone Burnett, Ben Harper, and more).

This is great music, there's not much else to be said about it. If you hate yourself, you won't buy this album. I first heard "Mercy Killing" on the local college radio station (which, like most college radio stations, usually plays indie rock and other alternative music as well as some alternative "music"). Admittedly, it kind of blew my mind hearing a country song on 91X in Monroe, LA, though they have been known to play Johnny Cash's version of "Hurt" and very, very rarely Cash's version of U2's "One." Anyway, when I first heard "Mercy Killing," I instantly fell in love and frankly, I can't get enough of this band. They remind me of the good old days of Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash, and Kris Kristofferson but without feeling like a the same old rusty car with a new coat of paint slapped on it. This is good music to listen to when your girl has got you down and all you want to do is drown yourself in a bottle of whiskey. Plain and simple, this is a great album by a great band and they need plenty of opportunity to make more albums like this one.

J. Charles and the Trainrobbers-Upon Leaving
One of the very best albums EVER!! This album is so much more than a country band...it's attitude, style, depth & complexity that crosses a multidue of genres! It will be appealing to country fans, rock fans, and everything in between. Give it a listen, and I'm sure you'll agree it's amazing! No one else makes a steel guitar sound like a rock star instrument like this! (Danny Crelin is one amazing pedal steel gangster!) The lead singer, Jeff Saenz (J. Charles), has so much heart in his voice...it's soulful and truthful. I predict this is the debut album of countless others to come in the future. You'll be seeing the name J. Charles and the Trainrobbers in lights!
