Luxurious foaming hand wash in delicious garden fragrances. Upper Canada Soap is celebrating 40 years of bath, body, and beauty. It all started in 1969 with a hand-made bar of bayberry soap. Drawing upon the natural beauty and resources that our Canadian landscape offers - clear Canadian waters, endless fields of botanical herbs, and natural minerals - has been the secret and inspiration behind our beauty products. With over 2,000 bath and body products to our name, our focus is a commitment to natural product formulations leaving harsh chemicals and preservatives out of the mix. None of our products or ingredients are ever tested on animals. And as always, we keep our products close to home by developing and manufacturing all of our personal care products locally in Canada.

This was a lovely addition to my upstairs bathroom, or as I call it, not my bathroom at all since it is hogged every morning by other, less critical bathroom hogs. But yet I'm the one who gets to clean it. So I'm the one who gets to decorate it.

In the past year or two I've been buying "higher end" hand soaps because the harsh smells of regular household ones have just started to grate on me. I haven't landed on the perfect one yet (Seda France Japanese Quince comes as close to perfect as possible, though - and I just found that they have it on Amazon, which it wasn't at the time I bought it for like four times more money), but ideal for me is softly scented, is slightly pleasantly noticeable in the room right after someone uses it, looks like part of the decor, doesn't dry out your hands, and doesn't linger sharply on the hands so much that for instance it interferes with your olfactories when you're trying to eat or whatever.

All the fragrance variations of the Upper Canada line, along with their gorgeous bottles, compelled me to try one. I'll have to confess that every soap I've ever tried with Patchouli in it meets the requirement of "softly scented" - which I gather is part of the reason for its vast popularity in characteristically non-harsh circles. So the combination of fragrance and bottle design led me to choose the White Orchid and Patchouli garden explosion.

Unfortunately, the scent of this one is extra-sharp, extra-harsh, not patchouli-y at all, but also not white-orchidy at all - and oh, dear Upper Canada people, I'm ever so sorry to say it, it smells just like every Dial kitchen hand soap I've ever used.

BUT it's so much prettier, and the liquid-to-foam form factor means you don't use very much.
