I bought this book for a college class. I found it remarkably biased. Not to mention it quotes, I believe Anslinger, as saying marijuana is akin the monster Frankenstein. As any literate, well-read person would know Victor Frankenstein is the scientist who creates the beast, not the name of the monster. Which I suppose is a problem more with Anslinger's ignorance than the books, but I'm sure there's an abundance of examples of those too. IE: it sites Wikipedia. Nuff said? I would instead refer prospective buyers to the Psychedelic Encyclopedia by Peter Stafford.

This book was used for my Youth Addiction class at LBCC (HS-205). It is fantastic! Easy reading, very factual, easy to understand and full of information. While I typically try to sell my used textbooks as soon as the term is over, this is one I will be holding on to! Far and away the best textbook I have had in all of my schooling.

Hats off to the authors!

I am a Chemical Dependency Professional and this is a excellant reference book for any library. This book takes you from the pre-history of drugs up to the present. I refer to this book two or three times a week.

I've been referencing this book for 3 years at both of my jobs in drug rehabs, in school (social work MSW), and in giving information to family members who ask drug/addiction questions.

I bought this book as part of a MSW program, specifically for a substance use class. I must say, this book was not helpful at all. It tends to explain drugs as if you had no clue as to what a drug was or what it did. The writing was very dry which made it more difficult to want to read it. It did seem very encompassing as to all types of drugs throughout history. Despite all of the information I would still not say that this book was helpful. Unless this was assigned reading I would not recommend this book at all, look elsewhere for information on drugs.

This is a great text and I rarely give out that compliment. I like the broad perspective it provides that is more realistic that many such books that are from the moral model era perspective that are using misinformation to scare people about the ills of drugs rather than the truth which is scary enough. This would be a good reference book for the average household or professionals office and should be required reading in all schools! Pick up an older edition for yourself or like I did to lend to friends, family and clients.

So far I've only gotten throught the first chapter. It's a dense amount of information, but it is incredibly well written and informative. No extra words just to take up space and get something into book format. It's definetly a text book. The first chapter gives you an extensive review of the human relationship with drugs since the beginning of time, and forty pages later, I feel enlightened and full of ideas. Incredibly insightful and well worth the price for someone with a deep interest in this field.
