Editorial Reviews

"Nothing gets one s attention like one s imminent demise, writes Gene O Neil in An Upraised Chalice, a book that chronicles the remarkable travels, adventures and near-death experiences that have marked his quest to discover the meaning of life. O Neil s practical insights, born of experience, cut across religious boundaries to convey a vibrant spirituality in plain, accessible language. --Kristine Morris, ForeWord Reviews (Awarded 5 Stars)

An Upraised Chalice sets the tone for anyone ready for their own journey of discovery. Those who would drink from O Neil s chalice of understanding will find its contents full and complex. Near death encounters, a travelogue to the world's spiritual places and their impact on his life and understanding make for a fascinating blend of self-inspection, pilgrimage, and revelation that holds many possible truths that will resonate with many readers. O'Neil's search in a way can be identified as the modern dilemma of 'everyman': "There is a growing sense among many that something major is missing in our civilization - a lack of moral compass, a lack of direction. Many are looking for answers." And the crux of living lies in these questions: "The years turn into decades and sooner or later, (hopefully later) sickness or accidents happen and all are again confronted with the big questions: Why? What's next? What has this life that I've lived been about? As one begins to consider their own eventual departure: What have I been able to do to make things a little better? What have I passed along to make others' lives more beautiful?" --D. Donovan, Midwest Book Review

The remarkable story of a lifetime quest by a modern-day mystic of his world travels and then integrating his experiences back into professional life in America. But what is really interesting here are the practical disciplines that he incorporated into his life that paved the way for his survival in multiple near-death experiences. A fascinating and thought-provoking read. --David Tame, author The Secret Power of Music and Beethoven and the Spiritual Path

More About the Author

Gene O'Neil is a teacher, builder and flight instructor. He is a family man and has long been a student of life. His background is as unusual as his book. After growing up with faint memories of previous lifetimes, and an unending urge to remember what it was that he was supposed to do, he embarked as a young man on an epic journey from which he did not know (or care) if he would return. These experiences, some of which were quite extreme, are detailed in this story and set the tone for the integration of a life filled with the teachings of the great masters known as The Brotherhood of Light.

When he returned to the United States 17 months after he left on his quest, he resumed his studies at the university and learned how to fly. He became a professional pilot and balanced that time in the air with building a self-sufficient homestead in the Green Mountains of Vermont--a passive solar home powered by a hydro-electric plant. It was here that he has raised his family and hosted meditation retreats for 25 years. This period was punctuated with multiple near-death experiences and other mystical encounters. Aside from being a pilot, builder and cabinetmaker, he designed and built a state-of-the-art solar aquaculture facility that received national attention. He was asked by the United Nations to bring this design to developing countries.

After a lifetime of extraordinary adventures in studying and experiencing first-hand the teachings of the Great Masters of east and west, he wrote it all down so that his children and all others might benefit.

An Upraised Chalice is a one-of-a-kind book that drew me in from the first lines of the first chapter. It is a true story of the extraordinary experiences of Gene O'Neil, who - in his early twenties - set off on a trek across the world to find the meaning of life. The adventure is engaging, and at times truly gripping, as the author maneuvers through various near death encounters along this journey. On occasion I had to take a deep breath and tell myself... "He lived to write this book so he is going to be okay!" Above all, it was his ability to trust that still small voice of the heart, that he recognized as his own I AM Presence, that made the greatest impact on me. O'Neil came face to face with death, financial ruin, and more, and held his equanimity through it all. I recommend this book to anyone looking for inspiration to live in the present, be steadfast in daily spiritual practices, and open to discovering the very Presence of God within.

A young man in the 1970's goes on a quest for a higher meaning to life. Driven from the materialism and claustrophobic dogmas of the West and drawn by the mysticism of the East, he travels through Jerusalem and on, by road, through Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan arriving in Nepal and the Himalayas. He finds himself in the foothills of Mt. Everest, at 18000ft altitude, many miles from shelter and warmth, struggling to recover from a fall into a crevasse as the sun sets, facing certain death if he cannot. Recovering from this experience and enriched by spiritual insights gained from his journey so far, he is eventually drawn to south eastern India where his relentless quest leads to new self-realization and inner awakening.
The author takes us on a tour de force of self-discovery, physical stamina, and a spiritual quest culminating in some extraordinary experiences in his later years. On the way we stop and share with him some of the sacredness of many of the holy sites and shrines he visits. He shares with us the fruit of this path of self discovery and some encouragement and signposts we too can benefit from on our own.
Hurrah for a remarkable story of one man's quest for spiritual enlightenment and for sharing it.

I must admit this is one of those books I really hated to see end, for I grew most attached to the nearness and dearness of its pages. It is rare indeed to find a book with such an open door into the very heart and soul of ones being as was the author has portrayed.
Though the depth and breadth of the material is vast in many areas of consciousness and awareness one seems to always return to a central them and intent, the oneness within each of our own hearts, to God and to God in all of life. The book provides in great specificity a number of truly amazing experiences of a truly accomplished visionary on many fronts yet there is a sweet humility and gentleness that does not overwhelm the reader allowing for greater understanding of the truths and purpose behind the experiences. God is the doer in all things and resides as Pure Love and Goodness within the heart of each one of us.
The author did a wonderful job in taking the sublime esoteric areas of his life and connecting them to the day to day reality of living ones life, shall we say the more mundane aspects all the while showing in pragmatic methodology how to deal with many areas of ones life including very real life threatening circumstances.
There book provides a great resource and primer for anyone seeking the basic fundamental needs we all have, love, health, wealth wellbeing etc. and despite the depth of the authors experience it provides an entry point for all! I most especially enjoyed the author’s ability to "paint" a picture in words making it much easier to visualize the concepts as well as the actual experiences as they were recounted.

Stunning graphics, cover and inside photos. Inspiring life journey of inner and outer discovery. I an the editor of a health magazine and I excerpted Gene's book this month. This is my introduction: Periodically a book comes along that is capable of changing people’s minds about Reality. The just-released “An Upraised Chalice” is one such book. It chronicles the world travels and the inner and outer experiences of the author, Gene O’Neil, from Vermont. Gene includes all the stunning stories, miracles, and near-death experiences that have marked his life, told in an engaging style, filled with pictures taken along the way, and ringing of the truth of experience. With other such books, such as “Proof of Heaven” and “Heaven Is for Real” (now a movie), it seems the tide is turning for the mainstream’s acceptance of life after death. I’ve known Gene as a close personal friend for 30 years and proudly present a few excerpts and reviews from his book. (The cover art, available as a fine-art print, was painted by another great friend, Damian Gerard-Bland, from England.) To purchase Gene’s book in paper or eBook format, go to, or visit —Enjoy!
