Had the pleasure of reading a galley of this excellent story collection. Michel explores the strange and the odd, but never indulges in it. These stories define 'uncanny.' No matter how absurd or imaginative the scenarios may seem, each tale is imbued with a familiarity that makes the situation feel close, and not just possible, but probable. Upright Beasts is a collection that haunts its reader in the best possible way.

Lincoln Michel's stories are truly strange beasts. Many have the surreal quality of a bizarre dream, but unlike a dream that soon dissipates from our consciousness when we wake, these stories stay with you- keep you pondering, thinking and wondering. Michel has a unique style and witty sense of humor that left me wanting more.

Michel's collection hooked me right off with the first story, "Our Education". HBO should do a mini series based on that one. Great stories..

A wild, funny, eclectic and resplendently dark collection of stories. Denis Johnson + Donald Barthelme + Shirley Jackson + HP Lovecraft approximates, somewhat, the very, very agile stylings of Lincoln Michel. Any fan of either contemporary literary fiction OR genre fiction will warm to this one. What they really mean when they talk about: slipstream. Blistering, uncanny stuff.

Lincoln's writing is both a linguistic exercise class and a encyclopedia of entertainment. He portrays the usual as alien and alien as normal. This is a wonderful piece of work and I love to recommend it.
