4.0 out of 5 stars The Sioux Uprising of 1862, November 16, 2011
By
Sam Adams (Minnesota. USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Sioux Uprising of 1862 (Publications of the Minnesota Historical Society) (Paperback)
Minnesota became a U.S. territory in 1849 and a U.S. state in 1858. This 102 page book was published by the Minnesota Historical Society in 1961, with a second edition in 1976. It is an overview of the events of this month-long war instigated in August 1862 by Santee Sioux (Dakota) against white settlers in southern Minnesota. Sadly, the cold-blooded depredations (not given explicit detail in this book) are less known than that, afterwards, 38 of these Indians were lawfully hung at Mankato following the involvement of Abraham Lincoln, who decreased the number to be hung down from the 303 sentenced (originally 307, then 306, but 303 comprised the list Lincoln was given - Lincoln approved the execution of 39, but one was reprieved). Estimates of the U.S. American dead range from 450 to 800, according to the author.

In comparison:
1863 at Bear River, Idaho, 224 Shoshone were killed;
1863 at Whitestone Hill, North Dakota, over 100 Sioux and Sioux allies were killed;
1864 at Killdeer Mountain, North Dakota, 150 Sioux were killed;
1864 at Sand Creek, Colorado, 130 Cheyenne were killed;
1866 at Fort Phil Kearny, Wyoming, 81 U.S. Americans were killed;
1868 at the Washita River, Oklahoma, 103 Cheyenne were killed;
1870 at the Marias River, Montana, 173 Blackfeet were killed;
1871 at Camp Grant, Arizona, 144 Apache were killed;
1876 at the Little Bighorn, Montana, 253 U.S. Americans were killed;
1890 at Wounded Knee, South Dakota, 128 Teton Sioux (Lakota) were killed.
These numbers are taken from Gregory F. Michno's [2003] Encyclopedia of Indian Wars.
Michno estimates 644 white civilians (aside from U.S. soldiers) were killed in the 1862 uprising. (Michno: 367)

This book by Carley represses almost every detail about the brutality and inhumanity of the Indians against the settlers. It is a sanitized look at the war, but it does provide an overview and includes many photos and illustrations from the period, along with photos of monuments around the state commemorating what happened.
