Propaganda at it's finest,
This review is from: Uprising (Paperback)
Truthfully this is probably one of the worst, if not the worst, books I have ever read. It was filled with blatant biases condemning the entire white race on largely unfounded and ridiculous claims, and served as an unwavering advocate for black racism promoted by figures within the Nation of Islam, particularly the racist beliefs of Louis Farrakhan. This book was nothing more than a shameless plug for the Nation of Islam and provided virtually no insight in the area of gang history. Rather the book served to detail a series of prejudicial interviews with past gang members about how the end gang violence, which simply reiterated common knowledge that has been presented through a multitude of media outlets for decades.

I have taken a Gang's class at school, and did an internship for a Gang Suppression Unit. I am currently working on my Master's in Criminal Justice, and plan to focus my thesis on gang culture. That said, this book just exploits people for the author's gain. No substance, no background, just rumor and innuendo. The book talked about a black child who had been killed by a Korean woman during the LA Riots. They didn't even get the child's name right, but they used her case to prove theirs (pg 197 in book. Called her Latasha Harlins "Natasha".. Shoddy research, poor choice of interviewees (everyone seemed to have the same agenda, and it was to tell the biggest lie they could get away with to immortalize themselves and their gang. If you really want good gang information, go to the FBI's website and read and download for FREE! If you want to read about juvenile gangs, go to the US Department of Justice website and look at their Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Bulletin (also FREE!). Knowgangs.com is also an excellent site, and has some book recommendations on there too.

Great history of gangs, everything in here is true. Except a lot of these guys talk about coming together as black people against the oppressive white man. Total garbage. Why get together against the white man? What kind of ingorance is this? They seem to love their gang history as well, unfortunately gangs are pretty pathetic. They are not like the mafia at all, nothing romantic with these people, they are just poor people who are drug crazed and kill each other over 5 dollar bills, or simply because of a stupid color?
