5.0 out of 5 stars Real Life in Rural America, November 28, 2001

This review is from: Upriver, Beyond the Bend With at Abby Creek (Hardcover)
If you're looking for pollitically correct, bland, mass-produced, liberal dribble that won't make you think past the ink on the page, don't read this. The poems in this book are biting social commentary, challenging to accepted religious traditions, yet are equally mixed with humorous, delightful glimpses into real life of real people. I especially enjoyed the sonnet cycle, AT ABBY CREEK, where the author shares glimpses of his life with vivid images. These poems will make you think.

I've included the publisher's description below:
UPRIVER is a collection of poetry that defies orthodoxy. Drawn from the author's experiences in Alaska, Oregon and Idaho, these poems echo his life in a voice of long rural residency. They truly come from the upper stretches of the river of life, those runs and drifts beyond the reach of travel writers.

The first 24 stanzas of ABBY CREEK's 110 stanzas were published in American Nature Writing 1998 (Sierra Club Books), edited by John A. Murray. This is the first time the complete text of the poem has been available.
