A staple for counseling on anger,
This review is from: Uprooting Anger: Biblical Help for a Common Problem (Paperback)
Uprooting Anger by Robert D. Jones is an absolute treasure, thoroughly biblical, extremely practical, and well written. Jones tackles a problem--sin--with which every believer must deal and, rather than offer some psychological mumble-jumble, takes the reader directly to the Word of God. The issue of anger is framed and handled as the Holy Spirit intended. As a result, the reader is given biblical instruction and hope.
Uprooting Anger would be helpful for any individual struggling with anger, and who does not at times? It is also highly valuable for use in counseling and as a Bible study. I intend to make use of this volume in all three ways. I would offer two caveats of a minor nature. First, used as a counseling tool it would take some guidance by the counselor. Just handing this book to most Christians might result in overload. Breaking it down into bite-sized portions will be needed in most cases. Secondly, I would have appreciated a little more insight into dealing with instances in which a person has harmed others unintentionally. For example, an accident in which an individual's negligence takes the life of a small child. Jones addresses this to an extent in Chapter 8, "Anger Against Yourself," but I could have used more. This is a book that will be used in my life and ministry for years to come. "Appendix A," which offers a number of worksheet assignments, will become a regular staple in my counseling on anger. - Gary Gilley, Christian Book Previews.com

This is a great book for those who suffer under the malady of an angry spirit or temperament. The book will, most likely, speak to those who have faith in the God of Scripture. It is a timely and valuable alternative to the "it's-not-your-fault-blame-your-dysfunctional-family" crowd of pop-psychology. For all those who need to get to the root of anger... buy this book!

This is an excellent book on dealing with anger and what the scriptures have to say about it. I shared this with one trained in clinical counselling and was told it was the best book available on this topic.

Where did my anger come from?
I didn't know I was an angry man until the autumn when my 2-year-old decided to stop sleeping at night and my wife contracted mononucleosis and had to sleep a lot. At the time, I thought my surprising rages came from groggy days and sleepless nights. But my friend Bob Jones contends that my sinful anger came from the residue of corruption in my new but still imperfect heart. In Uprooting Anger: Biblical Help For a Common Problem, Jones insightfully teaches what the Bible says about anger's true cause and gospel cure. The greatest strength of this incisive little book is the careful, nuanced thought the author has dedicated to the biblical data, combined with field-tested practical application. Jones was a pastor for 18 years, and it shows. His extensive counseling experience provides a wealth of true-to-life illustrations. Uprooting Anger covers a lot of ground. Not only does Jones provide a biblical definition of anger, a diagnostic for gauging the righteousness of anger and a detailed roadmap to change, but he also delves into specific problems with anger--such as anger against God and anger directed at yourself. A whole chapter is also devoted to helping others deal with their anger. This is a body-life book, practical theology at its best. Along the way, Jones dispels some of the psychological fog that floats through our culture. For example, he claims that the Bible nowhere teaches that we should "forgive ourselves." If I were writing the book, I might have put the last chapter first: "Why You Must Deal With Your Sinful Anger," but it also makes a fitting close. This is Jones' first time out of the harbor as an author, so his prose wobbles a bit in places and shows some unnecessary repetition, but the content is pure gold. I recommend it for just about anyone. It's perfect for both hotheads who bite people's heads off and "bloodless-murderers" who kill others with a cold look. Why not form a "12 Angry Men" discipleship group and go through the study questions and application assignments together? I want to. Now I know where my anger comes from and what to do about it, but I still need the body of Christ to help me actually uproot it.

The Best Book on Anger!,

This review is from: Uprooting Anger: Biblical Help for a Common Problem (Paperback)
Anger is one of those things that is easily spotted in others, but not so easily recognized in ourselves. On top of this, even when we do recognize it in ourselves it is easy to rationalize away or downplay thanks to a lot of unbiblical teaching from our world around us and the sin in our hearts. This is particularly bad news since most anger is sinful and does not lead to the righteous life that God desires (James 1:20).
Uprooting Anger is a Godsend because it dispels much of the psychobabble and other false information about anger and how to respond to it. Jones begins by giving the reader an overview on the biblical teaching on anger, which he defines as a "whole-personed moral judgment against perceived evil." He then helps us rightly distinguish between righteous and sinful anger and understand how anger tends to manifest itself in our lives, whether we tend to conceal or reveal it. Another strength of this book is the way it exposes the "roots" of sinful anger and offers very practical and biblical ways to "uproot" this evil anger from our lives. Roberts also helpfully addresses anger at God and anger at oneself. As the book draws to a close, the author gives us a chapter on how to help others uproot anger from their lives. He closes the book with a strong motivation for dealing with anger based on God's warnings and promises concerning this vice. This book couples good Bible exposition and theology with a keen understanding of human nature and very practical and usable application. The book is easy to understand and apply, and is highly recommended.

Great help for a sin study on anger,
This review is from: Uprooting Anger: Biblical Help for a Common Problem (Paperback)
I highly recommend this book to any Christian- mature or new believer- who has realized their need to mortify their sin of anger. The book is very Biblical and addresses many types of anger: from outbursts of wrath to quiet bitterness. It also hits on the many causes of anger and how to get at the root of the issue (your heart idols) and abolish them with the power of God's Word.

Many of us struggle with anger --- Or we have family members who do.
This book targets anger with specific Biblical principles and precepts that can help us move forward, overcoming anger with the truths of God's Word. Helpful for counselors and ministers to read, a bit imposing for the general reader. Useful, practical and saturated with Scriptures. For more on this topic, see works by Paul Hegstrom. Both Jones and Hegstrom show the reader how to overcome anger by replacing it with healthy, spiritual, Scriptural behaviors. Great reading, especially for those who help others as counselors, ministers, social workers. Barbara Sheldon, M.S.W. I also highly recommend: Moving Forward After Divorce: Practical Steps to * Healing Your Hurts * Finding Fresh Perspective * Managing Your New Life
