Book Description

6 and upEasy-to-Read Book S.
Tim's big sister Tina goes to real school and she is learning to read. Tim is stuck in play school, where all he learns is tumbling. He wants to read too and he tries to catch up to Tina by sitting across from her while she practices her reading. As Tina sounds out each word, Tim follows tong from the opposite side of the table. Soon, they're both reading -- but Tim does it upside down. Children who are ready to read will identify with this lighthearted story of sibling competition, pleasantly tempered by affection.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 2-3-An upbeat, positive story. Tim's older sister Tina is learning to read in school. At home the boy sits across from her as she does her homework. As she sounds out the words, so does he-while reading upside down and backwards. When Grandma discovers the preschooler's problem, she fashions a way for him to learn to read right side up and left to right. The full-color illustrations affectionately represent family life. A welcome beginning chapter book.

This review is from: The Upside-Down Reader (Easy-to-Read Book S.) (Paperback)
The book is written by a teacher for the learning disabled. The story is original and the solution to Tim's unique reading style is smart. This book illustrates the inaction of parents concerning their children's reading. Reading upside-down is abnormal, but Tim doesn't know that. His parents, however, know that it is strange, yet they make no attempt to correct it. It is only through the intervention of Tim's visiting Grandma that Tim gets the attention he needs. Reading disorders are often misdiagnosed, therby leading to more seriou problems as school progresses.
