5.0 out of 5 stars Great blend of Music August 8, 2004
Format:Audio CD
I came upon this CD when i met John McGann at at summer camp where he was teaching. Even though I'd never really heard much of this kind of music, i bought it anyway and i was suprised. It's just exellent. He blends mandolin, guitar, violin and several other insruments i believe. My favorite tracks are Honeybee, sligo lament, and Canyon Moonrise, although every track is brilliant. I look forward to more records and seeing him again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Some background on the recording April 28, 2011
Format:MP3 Music
"When I heard John McGann's "Upslide" I was immediately "hooked". Since then. I've worked
with John on numerous occasions...I'm still hooked! Any gig with John is an absolute delight. A
gifted multi instrumentalist who can play and write it all.
John's compositions are a testament to his individuality, and a reflection of his own unique
musical vision. While they all have lovely melodic lines and harmonic structures, they are all
markedly different and unquestionably worth the effort to learn.
His guitar and mandolin work are exemplary, with total control. He can reach in and squeeze
your heart one minute, or take your mind some other place, and bowl you over with blistering
Joe Derrane, master Irish accordionist

"John McGann is one of the most tasteful and versatile pickers on today's acoustic scene. More
than that, he knows what he's playing and can write it down so we can all learn a few new
David "Dawg" Grisman

"John McGann is my kind of musician- articulate and brainy, but with a wide perspective on the
past, present, and future."Upslide" shows how one can simultaneously preserve and update
traditional music. I smile when I hear him play."
Tim O'Brien

"John McGann has it all, repertoire, notes, technique, but most important, John has the heart
for music. Its one thing to be a technician, and another thing to be an artist. John is the best of
both. A consummate musician."
Frank Ferrel

The original tunes on "Upslide" were composed between 1987 and 1994, most toward
the later date.

4.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful acoustic music, lively yet soothing July 10, 1998
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
I first heard McGann music as part of the cd Dance of the Celts. He had three tracks there and they were so good that I looked for a solo work, found Upslide and bought it on the spot! It more than satisfied my expectations. In fact, I was now searching the site to see if there were more solo works from him. I believe he can play anything that has strings on it, be guitar, mandolin etc beautifully. It is the kind of music you can listen to while working, only problem is some tracks make you want to get up and dance ;). It is not necessary to be a fan of Celtic music to love it, since it is a mix of celtic, a touch of blues, country... If you like acoustic music this is for you! I hope he makes a new record very soon.
