About the Author

Bob Rehak began his career in the advertising business in Chicago more than 40 years ago. While primarily a writer, he has had a lifelong passion for photography. Bob spent four years documenting street life in Chicago's Uptown neighborhood during the mid 1970s. During the 1980s and 1990s, he also developed an interest in landscape and wildlife photography. He now runs Rehak Creative Services in Houston, one of the city's top twenty agencies and marketing communication firms. It should be noted that the book contains only a very small portion of the hundreds of thousands of shots he has taken through the years.

I was a Chicago Police Officer for 37 years and worked the Uptown area as a Patrolman for a few years, then several more years as a Detective. I knew Uptown from 1962 to the 1990's. Mr Rehaks book is by far the best book I've ever read about Uptown. He has captured the era of the 70's better that any author or photographer I know of. Ray Krull

When I give this, it will still be giving next Christmas. Once the author tells you that when he went into places he had always been frightened to enter ... he found people who were happy to have somebody pay attention to them ... this book is more even than a stunning piece of photojournalism. It's a spiritual journey.

A Brilliant find. This is the only way to step back in time to the most unique neighborhood in the United States of all time. These pictures are priceless, and this time will never come back. Thank God Robert Rehak released these pictures. They are golden.

My wife and I loved looking at the black and white photos. This book is a fantastic collection of photos taken of people living in Uptown Chicago as seen from a camera lens. It is a perfect coffee table book!

great book the pictures really capture the uptown neighboorhood, where I grew up, as a young punk I was a latin king, as I looked through the photos the memories just flooded in, I didn't realize how much poverty I grew up in I thought It was the normal way of life I've since moved on and made a good life for myself & my family. Bob did a wonderfull job capturing uptown & the people that lived there, the photos tell the whole story.

Great candid photo portraits of some of the residents who use to call Uptown their home. I still do. Sadly, gentrification is slowly but surely moving into Uptown and taking over.

The book is beautiful and contains very moving images of a unique and historic neighborhood in which I grew up (but don't have the clearest memory of). I could have done without some of the author's editoriializing in the captions, though.
