Gold Sugar,
By Gold Tooth Micky (Toronto) - See all my reviews

Quite honestly I can say that this is my favorite CD in my extensive collection. Sonny Cheba and Geechi Suede have the most ridiculous flows in the hip hop world today and their jive vocabulary is so dense it takes years to decipher, and yes it does make sense once you learn it. Tracks like Luchini, Coolie High, Sparkle and Black Connection are so [...] laid back, they make you want to crack open some bubbly and take a limo ride. Production is tight, including Trugouy the Dove from De La doing a bumpin banger on B-Side to Hollywood. Meanwhile straight diamond crook songs like Killin em Softly and Krystal Karrington stay dark yet smooth. Cheeba's got the most distinctive voice and Suede flows are insane. Often overlooked, this old school album goes back like chiropractors in a time machine, and keeps pleasant vibes trickling through your earhole.

Cooly Hi still gots me wild, fo' shee shee, player! Still sippin' on Amaret'ah! Man, these cats had flow! And there intricate and esoteric use of exclusive '70's old skool, Uptown slang was unparalell! Let's not even talk about the production, flawless! this is one major thing that Hip-Hop is lacking big time, ORIGINALITY! If you ain't up on this CD yet, do so, suga' booga'z! A must have for all Hip-Hop tenderonies & mackaronies!

One of the most creative LP's to ever hit stores,

This is some perfect any mood hip Hop. It canb appeal to the Jazz heads for it's smoothness and also has some good raw hip hop appeal to it. This is just a perfect blend music that sounds like it could have been recorded at any time by really any performer in some genre. It has many good songs like Rockin It-Krystal Harrington-Sparkling and of course This is It. I saw it in stores and picked up. It's a shame this was really there only release because this is pretty flawless

Uptown of a beautiful Saturday Night (4.5 Stars),

I've never heard of Camp Lo until I started visiting this site and how everyone kept saying that this was a good Cd, so I had to check it out myself. Camp Lo (Sonny Cheeba and Geechi Suede) looks like they've been holding down the party scene of hip hop comming from The Bronx. One song that I like is "Luchini aka This Is It" (I never understood the aka's in the titles) but it sounds like a song from the 70's. "Krystal Karrington" is the opening track that will set the tone of the CD. "B-Side To Hollywood" could be a dance joint to fit this duo's feel of trying to create a Hollywood type scene along with their style. "Black Connection" is another standout track that I like. "Rocking It aka Spanish Harlem" has a little salsa groove to the type of song. "Black Nostaljack" is a good song also. "Coolie High" appeared on the Coolie High soundtrack back in '96, one I also like.
One track I didn't like that much was "Killing Them Softly", somewhat of a track that doesn't fit their style. Other than that I think this CD was one of the best jams that came out back in 1997. It gives you a feel for one of those Grown And Sexy Club settings. Cheeba and Suede come correct on the microphone in this CD. Highly Recommended if you want to hear some upscale party tracks with tight lyrics. Standouts: Luchini, Black Connection, Rockin' It, Black Nostaljack, Coolie High

the freshest group to emerge in a year full of crap,
By A Customer
This review is from: Uptown Saturday Night (Audio CD)
After listening to countless hip-hop groups spew the same macho crap, remake classic songs that should be left alone or use the same '80's samples over and over again, I cannot tell you what a refreshing experience it was to hear Camp Lo for the first time. Every track on this album is solid and is guaranteed to make you bob your head. More Camp Lo, less Will Smith, less Master P.

A throwback...artistic, nostalgic hip hop (4.5/5),

Camp Lo's 1997 debut "Uptown Saturday Night" is a very underappreciated, unique hip hop album. The duo of Sonny Cheeba and Geechie Suede create a type of hip hop that is really unique and original. Their bouncy, happy rhyming style is just really fun, they both have cool flows and interesting voices, they really keep you listening. Producer Ski, one of the more underrated east coast producers of the 90s, creates dense musical soundscapes that are often just beautiful. If I were to pick two words to describe the sound of "Uptown Saturday Night," they would be rich and majestic. The sound is really nostalgic of multiple eras past, sampling classic jazz, soul, funk, and even early hip hop standards. This is one of the last great party albums, balancing the joyful banger singles with the toned, thoughtful slow tracks. I highly recommend "Uptown Saturday Night," this album is really special in a lot of ways and has been slept-on for too long.
The album begins with "Krystal Karrington," an upbeat, funky start where Cheeba and Suede introduce themselves as lyricists with their silky, smooth stylings. One of the best hip hop singles of all time follows, "Luchini aka This Is It." From the singalong chorus to the perfect horn-laden beat to the joyfully happy lyrics, this song is perfect, and there's not much more I can say, it makes the album worth the purchase alone. "Park Joint" uses a really catchy funky sample, I remember Pete Rock using this sample in the past, it's an upbeat track and a party-starter. "B-Side to Hollywood" has jazzy muted horns and the duo steals the show on the mic, the hook is great too. "Killin' `Em Softly" has a slower beat but some of the album's hardest verses. I love "Sparkle," a jazzy and beautiful nighttime song with another nice chorus. "Black Connection" has a sad and dramatic sample, once again the two rappers shine over great production, really bringing out the best in the music. "Swing" is another well-produced, catchy cut, and "Rockin' It aka Spanish Harlem" has some Latin influence. "Say Word" and "Negro League" are two lyrical highlights. "Nicky Barnes aka It's Alright" is dripping with style, and "Black Nostaljack aka Come On" is one of my favorites on the disc. "Coolie High" is gorgeous, slow and sultry. The album closes with an interesting mix of "Sparkle," it has no noticeable drumbeat and sounds like spoken whispered poetry. "Uptown Saturday Night" is an album unlike any other I've heard, it has tons of replay value and is just executed with near perfection. The two rappers are so unique, excelling on multiple levels, and the production is almost flawless. I don't know if it came at the wrong time or was just above the world's head, but this one is highly recommended, it's a slept-on and underrated gem. Listening to "Uptown Saturday Night" just makes you feel good.

Definitely Underrated,
By D. Smith "Dnice" (Memphis, TN) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Uptown Saturday Night (Audio CD)
Yeah, I have to agree with M.M. Smith aka "Hip Hop Chick" that this album definitely represents the essence of real Hip Hop. What these rappers are puttin' out today can't hold a match to the sound that these cats put out over 8 years ago. This is what Hip Hop was supposed to evolve into, but instead the "thug life" has become mainstream in today's rap-and that's just what it is-mostly a bunch of loud talkin' and cursin' that don't amount to much of nothing. Not much of the rap music being played today will be remembered down through the years, but I think that "true" Hip Hop heads will remember Camp Lo for mastering their craft with this "Uptown" album. This is smooth, head-bobbin' Hip Hop. I'm hearing the timeless classic "Luchini" that was sampled in a track that's being played on the airwaves today, which is what sparked me to write this review (and watching fine-ass Thelma on Good Times on TV Land!!!)-that joint there was, and still is the sh-t!!! It's just a shame that what they were trying to express in recapturing the essence of the 70's wasn't fully embraced and therefore their music career didn't blossom to its full potential. I hope that some record label out there will take a chance and try to recapture this style of Hip-Hop and allow these cats to do their thing on another album-I'm sure that they still got skillz. Shot out to Camp Lo-bring us some more flow-y'all still bangin!!!

Pure Niceness,

Quite possibly one of the most slept-on albums that I can think off. These guys complement each others flows perfectly. Coped this a few years ago and I'm still putting tracks on tapes. I suggest you make a copy and play the copy. Keep the original in safe keeping. Hot sh*t.Pure Niceness. Lots of head-nodding hip hop, tight production, clean beats.

I simply loved this album. The production is well put together. What really makes Camp Lo is their image and originality not their old school type lyrics. The fact that their style is based on old school is actually quite a change from all of these "new age" commercial rappers. Its nice to see something different for a change. If you havent gotten this album (which you should have had for about 3 years now), then get this. This album is something real hiphop heads can feel and at the same time people who are just into commercial rap will also feel this album. Its a little something for everyone who is into hiphop of all kinds.

Camp Lo: A hip-hop force to be reckoned with,
By Scott Kobold (Missoula, Mt. USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Uptown Saturday Night (Audio CD)
I charge all fans of hip-hop with the task of finding a duo that can pull off rhymes with the flowing, groove-ridden perfection that Sonny Cheeba and Geechie Suede bring to the table. Their jazz-influenced style and flow go beyond infectious. With Camp Lo's repertoire, it's a damn shame that we the fans have access to only one album, as great as it truly is. If the group were to issue a new release tomorrow, it would be in my player by tomorrow night. I am the General Manager of a college radio station that obtains and plays a considerable amount of hip-hop, whether it be underground or mainstream. I have yet to discover a hip-hop act in either genre that in my opinion comes close to Camp Lo's freshman effort. And I ain't just blowin' smoke (hint, hint). Check 'em out, I guarantee, you will not be disappointed.
