UK Hip Hop Invasion,
By A Customer
This review is from: Upwards (Audio CD)
If Roots Manuva was UK hip-hop's Columbus (without all the slaughtering) - the first UK MC to seriously hit US shores - then Ty is the first and best of a growing wave of immigrants, bringing refreshingly original and well thought out hip hop to the stale, tired market that is US hip-hop (notwithstanding a few notable underground MC's that continue to represent here). Oh yeah, and his beats are bangin'. Anyway, I'm too lazy to go through every song on the album - just get it. The lyrics are funny and intelligent as hell and the beats will snap your neck off. What more do you want? You want More?PS: Ty's also a lable-mate of Roots Manuva's, and the remix they do together of Ty's "You Want More?" (remix not on album) is just tight as hell.

To all UK Hip Hop lovers: This IS IT! Possess it immediately! To all Hip Hop lovers: Take it and taste the best of what hip hop can and should be. To all music lovers: have some of the best music around for the last 10 years. Now, diving in. If you're in love with SUB BASS, smart lyrics and killer beat this is your album. Ty gives us the best of British hip hop with dub feel around. Upwards is very energizing, very atmospheric; it's great for charging yourself up. You jump to your feet and start moving. It possesses and overwhelms with Massive Music Production. Killer Killer Killer Sound. Truly Mastercrafted. If you like ragga, dub, hop, whatever, just don't miss this one. Next level hop. If you like Big Dada (a Ninja Tune Label) and/or Roots Manuva especially, you don't need more recommendations. Ty's voice timbre makes the feeling unique. The album uncompromisingly demonstrates Ty's progress as an artist and a boundary pusher. His lyrics and subterranean bass make your listening a WHOA of experience. Bully sounds, ruffian, brutal ragga meet flyhigh colourful melodies to make you exhilarated. Ty's Upwards is a winning performance. Experimental and yet carrying light and making a huge party. Favourite tracks: Ha Ha (KILLER OPENING TRACK!!!), Look For Me, Music to fly to. Attention: Stakes may go up so high with Upwards that you'll become a tough customer - hardly approving of any upcoming hop musical material. Ty gives you the highest in music. Music to fly to.

This CD is fantastic. It circumvents the tired clichés of mainstream artists in a fresh and funky way. The rhymes are thoughtful, and fun. Most of all, the music is original. If you like Roots Manuva, or if you are tired of the same old sound coming from corporate hip-hop.... you definitely should check this out.Check out ninjatune's website if you want to see some videos. This CD is an instant favorite. Buy it!

So, I want more!,

Concious Hip Hop is normally perceived as a whole bunch of dorky kids rapping about their girl friend over some underground hip hop beats (normally not dancey at all). This album is 1.Concious and 2.Definitely Dancey! Imagine listening to your favorite jiggy Mc rapping about something that actually has depth as oppossed to the size of their rims or how thick their gold chain is. Now you have Ty. Ty tells us about his everyday problems from mans eternal struggle with women to life. It gives me a slight touch of De La Soul, but then a feel of Jamaican rhythms. I would say......buy this record........it's moving, but not afraid to be party music! |
