Well, probably 3/12 stars, but I don't have that option! Fans of Finntroll are usually drawn to the band by it's bouncy mix of polka-ish "humpa" music and extremely heavy black metal. This album will disappoint some due to it's lack in the humpa department - their albums "Nattfodd" and "Jaktens Tid" (if I spelled them correctly . . . ) are full of very bouncy folk/metal fusion and are intoxicatingly good, but this one goes for more of an epic dark black metal feel. It's got some powerful feel in it, but I admit I like it better when there's more folk in my Finntroll! (Note, it kind of reminds me of their first album "Midnattens Widunder" in this respect - I definitely have to be more in the mood for dark and grindingly heavy to enjoy these Finntroll, whereas the aforementioned Humpa-friendly ones are more accessible.)

After a year or so of listening, I think this CD deserves another star. Although it does lack in the "fun/humpa" department, it makes up for it in epic power. Amazon won't seem to let me add another star, but here I'm telling you - four 1/2 stars!

The first time I heard this, I went, "Oh no, not another Nattfodd." It's not that I don't like Nattfodd, but it left me a little flat compared to Jaktens Tid. Ur Jordens Djup seemed like a loud blur of sound, with no distinctive features. The keyboards, in particular, seemed buried in the mix as well as the guitars. There just wasn't enough separation to make each part stick out.

Then I listened to it a second time, and this had never happened with another album before, but it just clicked. Everything I was missing from the first listen fell into place. I could not only hear everything, but I actually detected melodies and all the little parts that make this music unique. The trademark Humppa is subdued, but there, and the pagan overtones are still in full force. This is actually quite good. It is not Jaktens Tid, but it is not Nattfodd either. I am glad I went through it a second time. This is good stuff. Highly recommended.

Now i'm a guy who loves black metal, black folk metal, viking metal, melodic death and black and i love this cd. Sure its not like the old polka-ish finntroll but its black metal if not its pretty damn close. I myself am a fan of old finntroll and i wanna see them live when they come to California. Even though its not the finntroll i fell in love with they changed in a way that wasn't bad but finntroll changing isn't good either but regardless this is a good album and i reccomend this album to people who like/love melodic black metal and folk.
