Dark & heavy, but here's the humpa?,
By
This review is from: Ur Jordens Djup (Audio CD)
Well, probably 3/12 stars, but I don't have that option! Fans of Finntroll are usually drawn to the band by it's bouncy mix of polka-ish "humpa" music and extremely heavy black metal. This album will disappoint some due to it's lack in the humpa department - their albums "Nattfodd" and "Jaktens Tid" (if I spelled them correctly . . . ) are full of very bouncy folk/metal fusion and are intoxicatingly good, but this one goes for more of an epic dark black metal feel. It's got some powerful feel in it, but I admit I like it better when there's more folk in my Finntroll! (Note, it kind of reminds me of their first album "Midnattens Widunder" in this respect - I definitely have to be more in the mood for dark and grindingly heavy to enjoy these Finntroll, whereas the aforementioned Humpa-friendly ones are more accessible.)
After a year or so of listening, I think this CD deserves another star. Although it does lack in the "fun/humpa" department, it makes up for it in epic power. Amazon won't seem to let me add another star, but here I'm telling you - four 1/2 stars!

Took A While To Sink In,
By Fred Rayworth (Las Vegas, NV United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Ur Jordens Djup (Audio CD)
The first time I heard this, I went, "Oh no, not another Nattfodd." It's not that I don't like Nattfodd, but it left me a little flat compared to Jaktens Tid. Ur Jordens Djup seemed like a loud blur of sound, with no distinctive features. The keyboards, in particular, seemed buried in the mix as well as the guitars. There just wasn't enough separation to make each part stick out.
Then I listened to it a second time, and this had never happened with another album before, but it just clicked. Everything I was missing from the first listen fell into place. I could not only hear everything, but I actually detected melodies and all the little parts that make this music unique. The trademark Humppa is subdued, but there, and the pagan overtones are still in full force. This is actually quite good. It is not Jaktens Tid, but it is not Nattfodd either. I am glad I went through it a second time. This is good stuff. Highly recommended.

Newest Finntroll,
This review is from: Ur Jordens Djup (Audio CD)
Now i'm a guy who loves black metal, black folk metal, viking metal, melodic death and black and i love this cd. Sure its not like the old polka-ish finntroll but its black metal if not its pretty damn close. I myself am a fan of old finntroll and i wanna see them live when they come to California. Even though its not the finntroll i fell in love with they changed in a way that wasn't bad but finntroll changing isn't good either but regardless this is a good album and i reccomend this album to people who like/love melodic black metal and folk.

Just what you expect,

If you enjoyed any other Fintroll album this is right up your alley. Harsh vocals mixed with folk humpa music sounds....nice! Not another boring and tired Death Metal album.

THE BLACK ALBUM,
This review is from: Ur Jordens Djup (Audio CD)
It seems to me that alot of metal bands start off hard and then go soft. With Finntroll's latest, I think they have done the complete opposite. The first time I listened to this I thought I was listening to straight Black Metal but after a more careful second listening I found a few gems in their latest work.
After the intro song which sounds like something that could be the prelude to a fantasy movie we get "Sang" where we first hear the harsher new vocals in the band. There is not much Hummpa on this song, but the guitars more than make up for that. The next song that caught my attention was "Nedgang". Instantly I thought of witches and shamans in the woods doing unspeakable things at night. The next track totally took me by surprise. After hearing the first few notes of "En Maktig Har" my mind conjured pictures of a beach level in a Super Mario Kart-type game. Huh?! As odd as this combination of N64ish game music and Finntroll was, I had to admit it was pretty good. Finally, "Ormhaxan" and "Maktens Spira" are also winners. The former being pretty catchy and the latter being more upbeat. The CD I ordered (from Amazon.de) also contains a DVD with two live videos featuring Nattfoed and one other song. Overall, I'm glad to see that Finntroll is trying new things and staying fresh. It may not be their best album, but it's much more worthy for your ears than most MTV mallcore stuff out there. I also recommend Korpiklaani and Metsatoell if you're into the Folk Metal genre.

If you don't already know Finntroll combines black metal and Finnish folk music like hummpa and it will have you bangin' your head and tapping your foot at the same time. Anyways I have to say that I love this cd and I have listened to it many times since I got it yesterday. They still have that same ol' Finntroll sound but this doesn't sound like any of their other cd's which is good. The metal aspects of their music sounds a little bit heavier and darker than their previous cd but don't worry because it's still full of that silly hummpa and they even throw in a solo. They also added in a little more folkish elements to some of their songs. Their new singer is also good and he pulls off being a good replacement which is great because I was a little worried when I heard they got a new singer but they always seem to get good singers or shriekers.
The intro track really pumps you up for the rest of the songs and it shows you what your in store for. The rest of the songs are fast energetic and in your face which will have you bouncing up and down. Thier last track is a peaceful instrumental piece and after like 8 mintues of silence they start so sing which sounds like a bunch of drunks at a bar. They got their original vocalist to write the lyrics for this cd and inside the booklette he says he wrote a tale about symbolic death and rebirth and the war against ones self. It's just too bad that they didn't include English translations with their Swedish lyrics. The DVD doesn't have any behind the scenes footage but it shows them live in concert playing Nattfodd and Den Iskalla Trollblodet which is just okay. The DVD is region free and in PAL format. This CD DVD package comes in a Digipak. I would recommend this to any Finntroll fan old or new and to any one who likes fast energetic metal that doesn't take itself too seriously.

Back to Basics,
This review is from: Ur Jordens Djup (Audio CD)
After more then a year I finally get this Cd. I have had it on my to get list when it came out, but priorities change.
A good deal of the reviews here on Amazon discuss how this is darker, and heavier then the last few albums. To be honest, you can't argue with this logic completely. The "single" or video that came off this Album Nedgang, is dark, heavy and filled with deep beats. Seriously, I could go out and raid and pillage after listening to this song. However, this is the darkest song in the album though. This is not to say the rest of Ur Jordens Djup sounds like Nattfodd, but the quick rythms of past albums comes back with the support of the keyboard orchestrating, and synthing accordion effects ect. I found the keyboard connects me to past work, and staying very Finntroll, while trying something different. It works. As the keyboards and guitars sound, at times heavier and darker, the vocalist, Mathias Lillmans, takes what is Finntroll and brings it to the next evolutionary level. To be honest, this album reminds me more of the earlier EP's then Nattford, which people are more familiar with. Over all if you are interested in Finntroll this is not a bad place to start. And for the long time listener, you will love the sounds and vocals of some of Finntroll's earlier work coming back. I haven't heard there most current release, but I hope it continues the trend of Ur Jordens Djup.

Well, this is one very interesting music album, I must say. I'm a fan of folk metal bands, such as Korpiklaani, and I saw Finntroll under 'recommended for you'. I was unsure of them at first, but little did I know...
I was browsing around my local music store one day when I noticed Ur Jordens Djup listed in the metal albums. I decided I would give them a try, so I bought it and listened to it when I returned home. When I first popped in the CD, I didn't really know what to expect. Next thing I knew, I was surrounded by the theatrical setting of track number 1, Gryning. It kind of reminds me of wandering through a dark forest or something along the lines of that. After a few minutes, the music went straight into the next track, I didn't even notice at first. I was practically dancing along with their catchy folk-inspired riffs and the foreign singing(Swedish, I believe?). The singer is a little bit screamy, but I soon began to like it. Some of the songs, such as the beginning of En Maktig Har, are really polka-inspired. It's a little corny, but at the same time incredibly catchy. If you're like me, you'll be having these songs stuck in your head for weeks! Basically, I'm really happy I bought this album. I just wish I could know what the lyrics were in English. My favorites are Korvens Saga, Nedgang, and Slagbroder.

Different Direction,

With this most recent Album, I get the feeling Finntroll is trying to be taken more seriously. Its a very good album but it is also pretty different from their previous releases. They got a new singer for this album and have kind of a more traditional black metal sound, hints of early Dimmu Borgir. Less Polka more darkness.
So for those of you into dark folky metal, you'll definitely enjoy this but for those of you who liked Finntroll because they were energetic and for lack of a better word, "fun", this release may take some getting used to. |
