Book Description

January 29, 1998 047197398X 978-0471973980 2
This is a topic of special interest in terms of recent and continuing discoveries of giant planets circling other stars. This second edition should be considered the definitive detailed description of what we know about Uranus. Uranus: The Planet, Rings and Satellites is couched in terms an interested non-specialist can readily understand, but contains the level of organization and details which make it a valuable resource for planetary scientists. Significant new data about the planet and its system have been collected by Hubble Space Telescope since the Voyager 2 flyby. Although planetary scientists continue to mull over the Voyager data, considerable changes in our understanding of Uranus have occurred since the first edition. This second edition includes comprehensive tables summarizing current knowledge of the satellites and ring systems, compares the planetary magnetic fields, and is generously illustrated with Voyager images of Uranus, its satellites and rings.

This is a topic of special interest in terms of recent and continuing discoveries of giant planets circling other stars. This second edition should be considered the definitive detailed description of what we know about Uranus. Uranus: The Planet, Rings and Satellites is couched in terms an interested non-specialist can readily understand, but contains the level of organisation and detail which also makes it a valuable resource for planetary scientists. Significant new data about Uranus and its system have been collected by HST since the Voyager 2 flyby in 1986. Although planetary scientists continue to mull over the Voyager data, considerable changes in our understanding of Uranus have occurred since the first edition. This second edition incorporates those changes (such as how the rings of Uranus were found) and also include pictures from the Hubble Space Telescope.
