Book Description

9 and up4 and upKodansha Children's Classics
The brave young fisherman who visits the Kingdom Beneath the Sea in this magical legend is sometimes thought of as Japan's own Rip Van Winkle. The glowing colors and exotic patterns of Shiro Kasamatsu's illustrations, originally painted half a century ago, lend a unique air of enchantment to a classic folk tale, retold in lilting verse by writer, translator and lyricist Ralph F. McCarthy.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Will captivate readers. Retold in droll, boisterous verse, this tale features many of the common themes running through Western fairytales, yet retains a uniquely Japanese flavor. The series will be a worthy addition to the multicultural bookshelf." -Publishers Weekly

"Brimming with the familiar and great themes of loyalty, courage and generosity." -Asahi Evening News

5.0 out of 5 stars japanese folk tales, July 25, 2010

This book is excellent both for the person who would like to read a good story to children as well as someone who wants to practice reading the hiragana that accompany the English text. Beautifully illustrated, it is a pleasure to look at.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun books, and a simple but effective learning tool, June 28, 2011

This review is from: Urashima and the Kingdom Beneath the Sea (Kodansha Children's Classics) (Hardcover)
My father recently started studying Japanese, and I wanted to help him however I could, and one way I knew was a good way was to get Japanese books. I've traveled to Japan before, but obviously it's not very realistic to go to Japan each time I need to get some books. I was very excited to see that I could get old Japanese stories on Amazon with both English and Japanese text. The books got here on time and they were in very good condition--my father was happy to get them.

Computer language programs are nice, but sometimes they are wildly expensive, and aren't all that good quality of a learning tool. But books are a usually less expensive way, a more effective way, and a fun way to learn languages. If possible it's best to have fun when learning something difficult.

So thank you for having these books for sale. I'm very happy that I could find them--and these are some of my favorite old Japanese stories.
