5.0 out of 5 stars Simply Delightful!
As a mother of two in Seattle, and owner of this book, I think that it is a sweet depiction of child-rearing in the city. I was actually just going online to purchase another copy for a friend's shower next week. 1.0 out of 5 stars Odious Tripe
This worthless little shopping list of things that the author likes to do in New York, has very little to offer the children it's allegedly "written" for. I throw those airquotes because the language in this book is literally a list of activities, ascribed to a mythical child:

"Urban babies attend the Ballet."

As a mother of two in Seattle, and owner of this book, I think that it is a sweet depiction of child-rearing in the city. I was actually just going online to purchase another copy for a friend's shower next week. I am surprised that some of these reviewers see this small book with only twenty words as an entire indictment of the upper middle class. I don't know how taking your child to a coffee shop or a museum makes you "obnoxious" and/or "pretentious". I would say it that it is a fair statement to say that parents everywhere want the best for their children - for them to be well cared-for and well-educated - what should be considered loathsome about that?

5.0 out of 5 stars Hip board book for urban dwellers, August 24, 2005

This has to be the best board book I have read in a while! I work as a librarian in a trendy area, and it so reflects the activities and lifestyle of the hip hot mama set in my neighbourhood. Gap babies, Running room joggers, yoga and more. If you know someone with a baby - tell them to get this book!
Unless of course they are totally lacking in a sense of humour about being a "yuppie".

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Urban Fun, August 7, 2005
This review is from: Urban Babies Wear Black (An Urban Babies Wear Black Book) (Board book)
At long last, a board book urban babes can REALLY relate to! Step off, Olivia. Make way, ducklings. Let's wheel the Bugaboo out for a mocha latte playdate and a tour of the Guggenheim, instead! We love the tongue-in-cheek, self-depracating tone -- And the illustrations are fabulous. Would make a fun gift.

This worthless little shopping list of things that the author likes to do in New York, has very little to offer the children it's allegedly "written" for. I throw those airquotes because the language in this book is literally a list of activities, ascribed to a mythical child:

"Urban babies attend the Ballet."

There's no rhyme, humor, cadence, fun or alliteration. It's simply a bullet point description of things it's feasible to do in Manhattan. The illustrations, while clever and cool, serve only to reinforce the worthlessness of the prose. And some of the illustrations are a little too complex for infants to focus on.

In short, it's the kind of cold, soulless husk of a children's book you'd expect Anna Wintour to write. A pointless collection of idiot snobbery with no redeeming value whatsoever. The artist should team up with a writer who isn't a self-absorbed snob with no real understanding of why infants like to be read to in the first place.

And while urban babies may indeed wear black, you'd think they'd enjoy some color and vibrancy in their lives too. They won't find it this book unless you change all the "lyrics" and tell a slightly more fun story yourself.

Don't let the pink cover put you off, this is THE book for Urban babies (and their parents.) A delightful read on how to be cool as one, and the nifty stuff you get to do that babies in car seats only dream of. A wonderful baby gift.

What a brilliant idea! The cleverly written and beautifully illustrated Urban Babies Wear Black is the next must have for urban parents everywhere -- and much more economical than the Bugaboo stroller!

Thanks to Michelle Sinclair Colman for reminding urban parents why we live the way we do.

My two little girls love this book and the new one, Country Babies Wear Plaid. The illustrations are so sweet. Both books are such nice examples of highlighting the differences between raising kids around the country.

I have now given this book to four friends and they all have just LOVED it! I used the book as the centerpiece for a gift basket with a local coffee shop giftcard, tickets to a museum and a baby bottle.

This is the perfect gift for any urban parent who is raising a baby without a minivan -- just fabulous!

2.0 out of 5 stars Not as cute as I thought it would be, January 6, 2009

The cover is very cute, and the title is so cute I thought the book would be pretty funny. But, it sort of let me down, it is just basic things that all babies do such as drink milk but in the book it says 'urban babies drink latte' with a picture of a baby drinking their bottle. It is cute enough if you are looking for some board books for you children to be able to flip through on their own, but I wouldn't recommend as a gift (which is why I purchased it).
