Amazon.com Review

Hopefully our future won't be as crime-ridden as what's presented in Mucky Foot Productions and Eidos Interactive's Urban Chaos. Should it be, though, let's hope we're protected by officers like D'arci Stern, a tough-as-nails female cop who carries enough weaponry and fighting combos to battle a small army. A dangerous gang, known as the Wildcats, rules most of Union City's dangerous streets. It'll take D'arci and the nimble fingers of an action gamer to liberate Union City and make it safe again for its once-peaceful citizens.

Urban Chaos features a series of interconnecting missions filled with various law enforcement-oriented objectives, such as preventing a mugging or robbery, serving a warrant, or even engaging in the good old-fashioned car chase. Multiple solutions to most mission problems provide an excellent amount of replayability--though you're likely to solve most with D'arci's fists or hand-held weaponry. An intuitive control scheme (a game pad works best) helps players perform Urban Chaos's wide range of combat and acrobatic maneuvers.

Urban Chaos's third-person graphics engine renders Union City with abundant detail: pedestrians wander sidewalks, leaves blow in the streets, and cars obey current traffic laws. Full detail requires a top-of-the-line machine; however, you can adjust many elements of the graphics engine to achieve a playable frame rate on the minimum system requirements. -Doug Radcliffe

Pros:

  • Excellent control
  • Diverse mission objectives
  • Multiple ways to solve problems
  • Detailed graphics
Cons:
  • Sluggish graphics engine without top-of-the-line hardware
  • No multiplayer mode

3.0 out of 5 stars Quality Game for a Quality Computer, April 26, 2000

Danny Ferraro (London, England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Urban Chaos (CD-ROM)
This game has probably has the best graphics I've seen yet! It has excellent effects, and a pretty twisty but very interesting story. There is however a different side to this. Since I have a very HIGH-PEFORMANCE machine this game is brought to the max. However I brought it to a friends house that has a computer who is about 2 years old and the graphics and all-out game were slow and sluggish. But that still doesn't take away from the fact that this is an overall good game.

However, there is another Con I spotted out about this game. Most have you have played Tomb Raider. Urban Chaos is pretty much exactly the same, just different story and the main characters are different(but they are both women). So just be AWARE when buying this game, if you already own Tomb Raider(1, 2 3, or 4, it doesn't matter).

All in all, AN EXCELLENT GAME for anyone with a high-peformance machine and that doesn't own Tomb Raider. I would rate this a 5 Star if it worked great on anything, but it doesn't.

5.0 out of 5 stars very challenging and a lot of fun., January 10, 2000

This game can seem almost impossible at first. The funny thing is that it doesn't matter because one has so much fun just playing the game that you can forget aboout your objective(s). Once one gets going with the game though it becomes much easier but still stays challenging.

This game is about figureing out how to complete missions. There is more than one way to complete each mission as well which makes it fun to play the levels over to try to find new thing.

I wish I could explain this game better but I can't so if you really want to find out how fun it is and what it is really like go to the Urban Chaos web site and download the demo. I had a lot of fun playing just the demo for hours. Imagine the whole game!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my favorites, April 14, 2004

This review is from: Urban Chaos (CD-ROM)
Urban Chaos is one of my favorites. You play the role of a tough cop who saves the city from being taken over by a ruthless gang. The game is made by Eidos who made Tomb Raider, but this is better than Tomb Raider. You can do much more in it than just shooting enemies as in a first-person shooter game. You can fight, you can shoot, you can use a knife or a bat to attack enemies, or you can just tackle them down and arrest them. You can explore large environments and take different paths to your destination. You can also slide down telephone lines, climb fences and gratings, drive vehicles, shoot exploding barrels, throw soda cans. The graphics are also great. The buildings actually have 3D wall textures, windows and doors are in 3D. And this is an older game designed for Pentium II computers which still has these great graphics. These are things not all video games can boast of having. One of the best things I like about this game is that the whole game is relatively easy to play, as levels advance they don't get harder to play unlike as in other games where upper levels get nearly impossible to beat, and that's in the easy difficulty setting. Urban Chaos has no difficulty setting, just one setting, and that is fine with me as long as I can win the game. The flaws in the game are minor and I would hardly give any attention to them. One problem is you may find the keyboard control for exiting a fight may not work very well and you are locked into fighting to the death if you happen to be overtaken by several opponents at one time. That can be frustrating, but that's not really a big problem. Another less than favorable aspect of the game is that in some levels you have to acheive goals within a time limit and those time limits, at least in my experience, aren't very lenient. I found more often than not I have to rush to beat the time limit and I end up failing the goal and I keep having to start over. Luckily there's a cheat code for automatically winning the game and by using that I can just bypass those timed levels altogether. I can ramble on about other great things about this game such as it has a good storyline, it has good voice acting, it has humor. Overall this is a really fun game.
