Urban Compost Tumbler Uct-7,

Was easy to put together. Seems very sturdy. Easy to tip the compost tumbler around for air circulation. It is big, but sits nicely in a corner of our back yard. Says first couple batches of compost takes longer than the rest, so eagerly waiting for compost. Been using it around three weeks or so. Seems to keep any smell at bay. No bad odors near it and so far so good, it is pest free. Overall I would say it seems like a good product for composting. Glad I didn't buy the even bigger one! If you want your compost sooner I would recommend buying some compost starter, because I think it will help it compost even quicker especially with the first two batches which are supposed to be slow. After the barrel is seasoned than it gets quicker.

Not a great design,

I bought this compost tumbler from another source, and I am now on Amazon looking for a different one. It's a pretty big purchase so I am upset with myself for not seeing the obvious design flaws. First and most important, the end over end tumbling: this is both difficult to do (one the tumbler if full, it's heavy and you have to lift the bottom up a long way to get it tumbling) and it is dangerous. Once you have the thing tumbling end-over-end, you have to get out of the way so it doesn't smack you in the chin, but you also have to catch it and give it a push to keep it tumbling for 3-4 rotations. Not easy or safe, so I ended up not tumbling nearly as often as I should have. The other problem with the design is the lid, as the instructions say once it is full the round opening tends to distort and become oval, making it hard to screw the lid on. Also, once the lid is on, you essentially have a saucer on top of your tumbler and every time it rains water collects there. Not will mosquitoes and whatever else breed there, but when you go to tumble it the water will splash all over. I just hope my next choice is a better one.

Excellent product. Directions make it easy to use. A person probably needs two to keep a constant flow of compost.

We purchased our first UCT in 2004 or 2005 and it's still working fine (in Brooklyn) when we moved to Boston we purchased one for our yard and it never worked properly. The company was a pain to deal with and did not stand by their product until backed up against a wall. In one of our many email communications they admitted to using a different plastic and manufacturing process since we had purchased our first UCT. To sum things up UCT's manufactured since 2008 or so (or at least the one we got : } ) will break. Our lid never screwed on properly (really gross to deal with), the crossbar broke twice (including the time they replaced it after months of complaining) & then the entire frame broke which rendered the composter useless. After another round of emails (3 months or so) they finally agreed to replace it if we sent them $78 for shipping. I was not willing to take any more monetary risks on UCT and went to a local shop and bought a perfectly functioning $80 composter that has a one year guarantee.
