3.0 out of 5 stars Far From Great
Unfortunately, this is a book that is rather "overhyped" and after reading it in one day seldom find myself picking it back up again. In my opinion it lacks both spaniel training finesse and the knowledge presented by more prominent and experienced spaniel authors.

5.0 out of 5 stars A+ resource for the urban sportsman, February 1, 2005
This review is from: Urban Gun Dogs: Training Flushing Dogs for Home and Field (Hardcover)
This book offers an all inclusive view for the individual living in the city that wishes to pursue outdoor activities with a sporting dog. It covers basic topics of good training places to the awareness of taking advantage of every training opportunity. This work offers the basics necessary for the novice to be able to independently develop a serviceable gun dog for the average hunter, while at the same time giving a glimpse of advanced work that the owner of a gundog may aspire to.

It is a must own for any serious gundog owner to put in his/her library and add to any bibliography.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Flushing Dog Training Book!, July 3, 2005

This review is from: Urban Gun Dogs: Training Flushing Dogs for Home and Field (Hardcover)
I found this book extremely useful in getting my dogs ready for hunting season, and find myself consistently referring to it. The authors present the subject matter in a highly organized, knowledgeable, and humorous fashion; they clearly know their business. The book contains solid tips on training for hunt tests, obedience, field trials, and hunting. Although it is primarily geared for novice and intermediate trainers, it contains very useful information for those of us who have trained spaniels and retrievers for many years. The book's unique approach is valid not only for those who live in the city, but for many of us who have access to good rural training grounds as well. Urban Gun Dogs is an excellent addition to any dog training library, and a must read for the serious flushing dog trainer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Urban Gun Dogs, February 12, 2005
This review is from: Urban Gun Dogs: Training Flushing Dogs for Home and Field (Hardcover)
The premise of the book is that the scarcity of suitable land, coupled with a more urban lifestyle, has brought forth the need for a different approach to training. Aside from this unique premise, the book is interesting simply because it is the first comprehensive training manual for flushing dogs to be published in a good while. This, coupled with up-to-date commentary on the contemporary American field trial and hunt test scene, makes it an interested read for anyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars The training book for the rest of us., February 27, 2005
This review is from: Urban Gun Dogs: Training Flushing Dogs for Home and Field (Hardcover)
I am like most spaniel and retriever owners in that I have a regular sized yard and live with neighbors who are actually next door. This book puts together training methods that you can employ with limited space and limited time to train. Most training writers seem not to realize that most of us do not have a ranch stocked with birds on which to train our dogs. This book takes a realistic approach to training dogs that will work for hunters who have day-jobs and professional trainers alike.

5.0 out of 5 stars Urban Gun Dogs - A hunters review, January 3, 2006
This review is from: Urban Gun Dogs: Training Flushing Dogs for Home and Field (Hardcover)
Urban Gun Dogs fills a niche that is long overdue in the hunting dog training literature genre, how to train a working gun dog with limitations imposed by residing in an urban/suburban environment. The authors have done a thorough and insightful job of provding practical advice and training drills to develop a well behaved and effective hunting companion considering the urban environment many people have to train their dogs in. The obedience section alone is worth the price of the book, and applicable to anyone starting a new dog or wishing to improve the manners of their existing dog, not just those in the hunting dog community. The book leaves behind the assumptions made in much of the classic literature on gun dog training.... that people have Edwardian era unlimited time, property and birds to train a gun dog. The program outined in this book will produce results!
