5.0 out of 5 stars What a wonderful book!, February 15, 2001

This review is from: The Urban Pagan: Magical Living in a 9-to-5 World (Llewellyn's Practical Magick Series) (Paperback)
Let's face it: many of us in the modern world have a hard time telling which direction north is, let alone finding enough sacred space to cast a circle in the city without your neighbors calling the cops to report you as a satanic worshiper. This is a lovely, down-to-earth guide for those of us who wish to live in touch with ourselves and the natural world while living in the 9-to-5 "mundane" city.

This isn't a guide to "how to ignore reality and technology around you." This is a guide to how to find magic, both old and new. My favorites are using a television screen (turned off) as a scrying mirror and zapping magickal ingrediants in the microwave to charge them with power.

Paganism grows and changes with the people who celebrate it. This book is an excellent and entertaining guide to that growth. Blessed be!

4.0 out of 5 stars A must-have for city Pagans, June 1, 2001

Books about Paganism should be *more* than just spells, rituals, and tradition--and this book is definitely more! Without any condescension, Ms. Telesco manages to explore some pretty complicated topics (such as the psychology, ethics, and imagery of magick) in simplified yet meaningful ways. And that's just the first few chapters! With handy tips and lots of factual information, this book shows you how to blend both the art and science of magickal living.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good for inspiration, March 8, 2000
This review is from: The Urban Pagan: Magical Living in a 9-to-5 World (Llewellyn's Practical Magick Series) (Paperback)
If you are looking for a good general book on Paganism, you could do worse than "The Urban Pagan". Over all, it's a little rambling and to be blunt, rather dull in places, but it's still a useful collection of issues to consider, points to ponder and more than a few lists of common correspondences / associations. Of course the downside to this is that there is more than a hint of 'One True Wayism' here. There're not nearly enough disclaimers about the associations being commonly held ones only instead of stressing the fact that not everyone uses the same ones. (Fire is south for you? That's nice. It's east for me. Etc.) All in all, a good book to give you something to think about when forming your own beliefs, but not as good if you're looking for deep meaning.
