I was really excited to get started using this rebounder, so when it got to my house I was all set for some serious bouncin' but instead was hit in the face with a seriously toxic smelling stench. For that reason alone I wouldn't recommend this to anyone.
There are also problems with the product itself. I'm sure it's a step up from the wallMart versions, but I found that the bouncing action wasn't (for lack of a better term) all that bouncy. Sure I bounced on it and whatnot, but it just didn't feel "right". Also the mat itself seemed stretchy or something. What I mean by this is when I bounced with both feet close together I really sunk into the mat which caused my feet to bend with it. What ended up happening to me is that I got sore feet (with or without shoes). It's also super squeaky & creaky.
I ended up returning it & buying a Needak. Yeah the Needak costs more but it's not outrageously expensive. Plus it's made in the US, it DOESN'T smell toxic (it doesn't really smell at all actually), and it "bounces" right! It feels more like a real trampoline (much more bounce than the Urban). It's also quiet & feels MUCH better on my feet. The Needak uses a high quality mat (the same mat that the other *really* expensive rebounders use) that feels "flat" when you bounce on it (meaning it doesn't flex much). The springs are also WAY stronger but softer feeling. It's kinda hard to explain, but you know it when you feel it.
I apologize if this sounds more like a Needak review, but I was really disappointed with the Urban & there are sooooo many glowing reviews for it that I had to add my two (opposing) cents. Hopefully this review will save someone from the dreaded Urban Stench ;)
>!< UPDATE 2011.05.24 >!<
Disclosure:
I was recently contacted by JB Berns (the creator of the Urban Rebounder). He offered to send me a new Urban Rebounder and a whole slew of Rebounder workout DVDs, all, surprisingly, without strings attached. However, I offered to update this review with my honest experiences because I felt that was the right thing to do. I'm a man of my word, so here it is.
Update:
Upon receiving this new Rebounder, I unpackaged it and again smelled that familiar perfume: Urban Stench. I'm amazed that after two years I instantly recognized it (a testament to the strength of olfactory memory). This smell appears to be something inherent in the manufacture of the product.
That said, the odor was MUCH MUCH less noticeable with this new model. I don't know if this particular issue was addressed at the manufacturing plant or if I got unlucky and received an extra-stinky version two years ago, but the bottom line is that while I instantly recognized the smell, it wasn't oppressive. I probably wouldn't even consider it remarkable enough to mention to a prospective purchaser if this was my first experience with the tramp. To illustrate this, it has been sitting on the edge of my staircase staring at me every day for over a month, defying me to write this update and I have only on occasion caught a whiff of it. Also please understand that I have an acute sense of smell and the previous model I had exuded this odor in a nearly palpable wall of stink... so I'm probably a bit sensitive to this particular smell.
I finally got the Rebounder set up today and bounced on it a bit in preparation for writing this update. Clearly spending a few minutes bouncing doesn't equate to a thorough testing, so take the following comments with a grain of salt. If memory serves, there are some differences between this new model and the model I had over two years ago. First, this model is better looking. I'm pretty sure my previous version had a lot of royal blue in it. This new one is basically black with a bit of red thrown in-a big improvement if you care about looks and prefer black/red over royal blue. Also it feels much firmer-a move toward to the Needak. It still isn't as solid and smooth feeling as the Needak but it's a heck of a lot closer than the model I used before.
I haven't had the time to put this one through the ringer, but my first impressions lead me to believe that the product has been improved. When I bounce with my feet together it feels similar to bouncing on the edges of the mat. Again, it's not quite like the Needak which feels basically the same wherever you bounce. I can also say that (at least with minimal usage) the UR is pretty quiet. I remember thinking that my previous model was going to wake up the neighborhood with its squeaking, but this one just makes noises one would expect a rebounder to make, at least with my initial brief bouncing session. Again the Needak is quieter (basically silent, meaning that it's quieter than one would expect) but nonetheless the UR has improved over its previous incarnation.
In closing, I will say that this version of the UR is better than the one I previously had. Is it better than or comparable to the Needak? Nope. But it's also only one quarter the cost. Hopefully in the upcoming months I will be able to spend some more time on it and if I find anything interesting to report I will post another update.
