Editorial Reviews

Discover the New Black Cinema!

Urban S.L.A.M. is an original ground-breaking series that introduces you to the exciting work of a new generation of urban filmmakers. Presented as a collection of short live action movies (S.L.A.M.'s) with compelling segments in between films, volume 1 features 8 well-crafted mini-movies produced outside of the Hollywood system. These S.L.A.M.'s include Tyson Beckford's acting debut (Gully), festival favorites that have premiered on HBO (The Date) and Showtime (Stone Mansion) and the first 2 episodes of The G-Spot Chronicles.

During breaks in between films, you are taken to the streets of New York City to get people's thoughts on what independent black cinema really means and behind the scenes for an intimate look into the filmmaking process.

Bonus features include a "making of"; documentary, coverage of a premiere screening, alternate endings, a photo slide show, cast interviews and coming attractions.

Smart, sexy, funny and insightful, this rare DVD offers a refreshing take on the black experience and will engage you from start to finish!

Films featured in volume 1 were official selections at festivals such as Urbanworld, Palm Springs International, H20 Hip-Hop Film Festival, New York Latino International Film Festival, Annapolis Film Festival, Pan-African Film Festival and the San Francisco Black Film Festival.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful By Arthur Lewin on March 28, 2006
A unique collection of short films by outstanding Black filmmakers interspersed with vignettes on the moviemaking process. The themes, the settings, the actors and the action are like a breath of fresh air when compared to the usual Hollywood fare. These short films run the gamut from the dramatic, to the comic to the sexy.

Something for everyone including the would-be filmmaker. The fascinating behind-the-scenes clips provide a birds eye view of the intricacies of the moviemaking process.

The camera work is outstanding, the acting quite earnest, and the sets and music help set a truly professional tone. Doubtless, you will like some of the films better than others, depending on your tastes. But they each tell a unique story that emerges directly from the Black experience in America.

You can watch this movie three different ways. First, as is, with the short films and background pieces presented alternately, or view the films separately, and the background pieces separately. Of course, once you become acquainted with all the segments you can, at will, go to your favorites. Surely Urban S.L.A.M. Volume 1 is destined to be a collector's item. And based on the compelling coming attractions, included at the end, Volume 2 will be just as good as this one!
