A Masterpiece in Every Way!!,
By J.D. (Florida, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Urinetown: The Musical (Paperback)
This item is the script for the Broadway play. It contains every bit of dialogue, song lyrics, and blocking used in the Broadway Musical. This script is absolutely phenomenal. I've listened to the recording an innumberable number of times, have seen the show on Broadway, and have read the script several times since then. It is just so funny! I don't know how they came up with this crazy idea and ingenious music and lyrics and dialogue, but if you're looking for an amazingly funny script to read, this is it!This book also includes some nice forwards by both the writer and composer, giving a long background on how this play came to be. A "Must Have" for any fan of this show, any musical theatre fan, or any fan of insane comedy!

"Urine" for a good time,
By Renfield "Up the Irons" (Edmonton, Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Urinetown: The Musical (Paperback)
Pissing. It's not something we think about quite often, but what if that right to do your private business in private was taken away? What if we had a price over our bodily functions, and what if we couldn't afford it?
That's what "Urinetown" often ponders. Urinetown is a hilarious tragicomedy about an unnamed city in a dystopian future that has been victim to a 20 year drought. This has caused an enforced ban on all private toilets, and only one amenity is open for use. However, the lines are long and you have to pay. No biggie, I can just go in the bushes, right? WRONG. Police are everywhere. And if you go to the bathroom anywhere else than the amenity, you are sent off by the cops to a place called "Urinetown". What is Urinetown? I cannot reveal!!! This is an excellent, thoughtful social commentary of a musical that is just outright fun. The music is FANTASTIC. The songs are just great! "It's a Privelege to Pee" is a hilarious, tongue in cheek song, "Run Freedom Run" is a catchy Gospel tune, "Act One Finale" is an intense and disturbing nail biter, "Snuff That Girl" is really cool... the whole musical is just too fun for words. In the end, Urinetown ends unhappily, but it does have a good message about the waste of water, and some great music and is just overall fun.

One of the best plays from Broadway in years!,
By Juliet (Pocono Pines, PA) - See all my reviews

URINETOWN: THE MUSICAL is on of the few original shows NY has seen in sometime. The satire is a great study of cultural phenomenon, the growth of civilization and even musical theatre. Read it once for concept, a second time for tidbits that make the show.

Everything but the Music,
This review is from: Urinetown: The Musical (Paperback)
I thought that the book would include some of the sheet music to the songs which i enjoy so much, but it does not. You basically get a copy of the script with lyics to the songs (not much different from the booklet that accompanies the CD).

A pickle in the brine,
By SpringAwakening (Transylvania) - See all my reviews

Absolutely fantastic is really all I can say about this. Each line is more clever than the next and the music is absolutely genius. Each song is unique and each lyric has value. The show has a great message and is hilarious. I've read the script and listened to the music at least 50 times and I still laugh out loud every time. I can't even pick my favorite song or scene or say anything bad about it.

I used this book in our amateur production of the musical and I recommend this script. The pictures and story behind the musical was interesting.

I always thought "Forum" was the best musical written but that is now in second place to Urinetown. This one also has a lot to think about as a commentary on our times. Shouldn't be missed.

THE MOST UNIQUE MUSICAL EVER!!!!!,
This review is from: Urinetown: The Musical (Paperback)
UrineTown was, i believe, the most unique musical ever been created! The Concept of this play was just fall-to-the-floor funny and has gone beyond what we see in broadway throughout the years. but what this show has is great characters and some witty dialogue and lyrics. It's unique concept gave the script strength and power and was a fame for all viewers who went out and saw it.
I encourage anyone who has heard little of Urinetown to go out and give it a shot. Maybe it could be a well-known musical some day.

Truckee Meadows Community College (TMCC) in Reno is performing this play in March 2006. I should add that it is one of the first community theaters to get the rights to producing this still-running show. Having the book in this format has been very helpful while blocking the show instead of lugging around the bulkier copies provided to us; however, as the Music Director pointed out, the lyrics written in the book don't exactly match what is in the score. But if you are an aficionado of Broadway Musicals, this is a fun book to have!
