Very Original,
By Durante Alighieri (Malebolge) - See all my reviews

I would have to say that this is my favorite CD. This band is in many ways the most unique band I've ever listened to. The music itself is based on Medeival Viking music, or so the band claims on their website. I find it hard to disagree... the music is very medieval european flavored. It is also spiced with a sense of adventure which is very hard to find in music. The music is also rather complex as it is layered... and these many layers all harmonise with eachother. On top of all of this, the music is deeply emotional, but unlike with most emotional metal, this music covers a wide range of emotions rather than just that of melancholy. If I had to define this album with three words, they would be: melodic, emotional, and adventurous.

One of my all-time favorite CDs,

This album is not only the best Thyrfing album, this album is the best viking metal album period. This album has quickly become one of my all-time favorite albums. There is not a song on here I do not like.
The clean-sung vocals on Mjolner and Urkraft, the acoustic interludes near the end of Home Again, and the powerful beginning of Jord are my personal favorite parts of the album. However, every song is excellent and make this album worth every penny you will spend. If its possible, I would try to get the version with the bonus track "Over the Hills and Far Away." Its a cover that is entirely clean-sung, and so it doesn't really sound like anything else on the album. It makes for a good listen, though.

Urkraft!!,

I don't know what does this word mean in Swedish, but in German it resembles to 'Ancient power' and that's exactly what you get for this album. I can best describe the music as viking-epic-metal and very good performed. I will have to disagree with this guy Mettier(If you can't understand personal music styles, man ,don't bother writing your opinion in public!!).Anyway, for 'Urkraft': Comlexity, VARIETY and Quality are the words that best describe the rifs. All best performed by guitars and bass, beautifully accompanied by Viking-style synthesizers and true Viking voices! Drums are very well adjusted to the variety of the tempos, often odd timed and in this aspect, technical. Don't expect speedmetal-velocities here, but the rythm truly dominates, and that's what Sweden is wordwide known for. Some (actually all)odd timing, great rythm songs in this album will get you up and jumping, sticking to the sound for weeks. I would though, like to listen to just a little more technical stuff from Thyring, that would be surely awesome!!!(maybe the newest albums..) The lyrics get you back to the glorius Northmen time. I once again have to mention the variety of the songs. You get a 60(yes sixty)-minute-CD that will not bore you. But you have to listen to it carefully at first. All in all, these guys are definately creative (all 6 members contribute to song's writing and music!)and have a personal style.

Very Good,
By A Customer
This review is from: Urkraft (Audio CD)
It's increasingly hard to find good music these days, with bands like Dimmu Borgir and Cradle of Filth abandoning their old sounds, succuming to the public in the name of wealth and fame and deserting any attempts to make good music. Do not be mislead by the previous review... in no way do any songs here resemble "Popeye the Sailor Man." There are a few seafaring themses expressed in the melodies and lyrics, and this is accurate, as the Vikings were a seafaring people (anyone who knows anything about Vikings knows that). The music IS rather complex, although most songs begin rather simplistically. By varying the complexity of the music, it only makes the song overall MORE complex. This band is definitely among the best out there.

I wouldn't even have cared if all the other songs on the cd were [bad], Mjolner and Urkraft are absolutley excellent! I would reccomend this cd to any black/viking metal fan, even some people who dont like black metal can appreciate their music.

Thyrfing's Best Release, definatory Viking Metal,
By "churinga" (Far, Far South, South of Ginnungagap!) - See all my reviews

The opening track "Mjolner" was what hooked me on this great album by this awesome band. Thyrfing's previous releases have been plagued by often cheesy sounding synth and uninspiring vocals. Till now.The track "Mjolner" starts with the sounds of hammering and anvils, assumedly being the forging of Mjolner (Thor's hammer) by the dwarven smiths...then the deliciously powerful edgy riffing begins with some great black metal vocal screams, very vikingesque swedish screaming. Then the best part is when the very cool melodic sounding chorus chanting comes in, I would liken it to "Odin Owns Ye All" era Einherjer, except with a harder, tighter edge. Thyrfing has created a distinctive, unique sound on this release, making this an essential albulm along with Einherjer's "Odin Owns Ye All" and Amon Amarth's "The Avenger" for definatory Viking Metal listening. The melodic vocal choruses, inspiring vocals, and expert musicianship including well moderated synth makes this highly reccomended!

This was one of my most anticipated cds when I got it. I had heard a few songs "Slumber of Yesteryears" "Ways of a Parasite" and "Breaking of Serenity" on mp3 before I bought it. The music is powerful, majestic, melodic. Any black metal fan will revel in the vocals and agression of the riffs. A melodic metal fan will also love it, the melodies are so well written they are hummable! The music has the feel of the Dark Ages and the adventures of a bunch of Vikings. heh. I think thats cool, I like that better than mainstream music which is not very imaginative.

This is a very nicely put together album. There isn't a single song I dislike, it's all very melodic and hard hitting. I would strongly reccomend buying this

By the numbers black metal,

Not content with allowing the prog metal bands to hog the pomp fantasy market, Thyrfing steps up to the plate with their own Celtic inspired mayhem. To be blunt, however, the sprightly melodies employed here don't mesh well with the attempted black metal that dominates the disc. Not only that, but there doesn't seem to be much that sticks to the cranium. Thyrfing craft a professional effort, both in sound and packaging quality, but, sad to say, genericism rules here.

Do Not Buy This!,
By Chris Mettier (Sonoma County, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Urkraft (Audio CD)
You will regret buying this album. I don't know what the last reviewer was talking about: The melodies are lame, the musicians are only average, the vocals are not only stupid - they sound terrible as well. Some of these songs sound like a cross between Popeye the Sailor Man and the theme to Gilligans Island. If you want to listen to Viking Metal try some old Vintersorg or something, but do not buy this album - it won't even make you laugh.
