Opening with a critical assessment of the controversies that abound in relation to the treatment of every stage of prostate cancer, this publication focuses on the evaluation of new pharmacological developments in prostates cancer treatment. The first study investigatres the effects of neoadjuvant androgen-ablative therapy (NAT) in a large patient population who all underwent radical prostatectomy. It attemps to answer the question of whether NAT can influence the definitive tumour pathology stage. The following studies compare the effectiveness of total androgen withdrawal with medical testicular suppression in advanced prostatic cancer and assess the clinical efficacy of a new 3-month depot of gonadotrophin-releasing hormone analogues as compared to a 1-month depot. The latter study illustrates good tolerance with the same level of testosterone suppression. Finally, preliminary results of long-term follow-up study of leuprorelin acetate depot (LAD) are presented which indicates that LAD is an effective treatment for advanced prostatic cancer.
