Extremely helpful -- but more, please!,

This review is from: Uruguay (Lonely Planet CUSTOM Guide) (Paperback)
We moved to Montevideo for four months in January, and we wanted to buy some sort of guide before we left. This was the only Uruguay-specific guidebook we could find. Overall, we're very pleased. It covers a little bit of everything: history, lifestyle and current issues in Uruguay, plus lodging, sights and eating at several Uruguayan cities. It even had some key Spanish phrases in the back. The only slight disappointment was that it just skimmed the service. Only 68 of the 148 pages dealt specifically with Uruguay. There were almost as many pages devoted to Buenos Aires -- in a Uruguay guidebook. More maps and restaurant reviews would have been nice. But even so, I would strongly recommend this book for travelers to Uruguay.

Being one of the few and most thorough books on Uruguay, this book is essential. While some people state that there is too much information on Buenos Aires, I do not feel that this is a problem. A lot of foreign travelers travel to Uruguay from Buenos Aires via ferry. This book provides sufficient information on all of the most populous cities in Uruguay.
However, if you plan on traveling through Argentina as well, all you need is Lonely Planet's book on Argentina. (Unless you are just traveling to Buenos Aires and Uruguay, then the book on Uruguay will suffice.) The book on Uruguay is an excerpt, taken verbatim, from the book on Argentina. It is not necessary to get both.

I had a hard time finding a comprehensive travel guide of Uruguay. The Fodors Guide of South America only focuses Montevideo, Punta del Este, and Colonia de Sacramento. This Lonely Planet guide focuses on many small interesting towns - and gives a much better overall view of things to do in the country. An added plus was that it includes in-depth information about Buenos Aires, Argentina. It's right across the Rio Plata - and a good add-on to a trip to Uruguay. So if you're thinking of going there, too - you only need to buy this one book!

After recently travelling in Uruguay this January, it's obvious that the Lonely Planet writers responsible for the Uruguay guide book probably never bothered to visit the country. For example, major hotels inside and outside of Montevideo, such as the NH Columbia in Montevideo and the Four Seasons Resort in Carmelo, are not mentioned. In addition, addresses and phone numbers for many hotels and restaurants are omitted; only websites are available, giving the impression that the Guide Book was written at an internet facility outside of Uruguay. I agree that the section on Buenos Aires is satisfactory, but Buenos Aires is in Argentina, not Uruguay. The book is of little help for a traveller in Uruguay and I question that a reputable firm such as Amazon should market it to the unsupecting traveller. Don't buy this book!

this book has very little information for anyone in Uraguay. It just tops the surface of what is possible in this beautiful country.

More than half of the book is about Buenos Aires, Argentina, not about Uruguay,

How disappointed I was after receiving the book, when it turned out that more than half of the book is about Buenos Aires, which it not mentioned at all on the cover. When I buy a book about Uruguay I do not expect half of it to be about a city in Argentina! We will be travelling to Montevideo and Juan Lacaze in Uruguay, in December and after our trip I will try to update this review to inform you if the info in the book was correct.

This Lonely Planet "Custom Guide" is really the Uruguay and Buenos Aires sections out of the LP Argentina guidebook, August 2008 (now out of print, having been replaced by the September, 2010 edition). It costs $14.99 + shipping, as opposed to $17.15 + shipping for the new LP Argentina guide. It says so on the front piece, but not in the Amazon listing. If I had known this I would have gotten the whole Argentina guide.

This fantastic little country gets little information in this book. I wasn't really interested in more information on Buenos Aires at this time. Unfortunately there don't seem to be many books out there with tourist information on Uruguay. We were interested in the back roads- not just Montevideo and Colonia. Will have to just keep on looking.

Good basic info on Uruguay. There is little to be found out there about travel to this country. Brief info on most areas outside of Montevideo and Punta del Este. About 1/2 of the book is about Buenos Aires.
Good assistance for our trip last week, but wish it were more comprehensive. |
