The stories of bomber crews told in this documentary demonstrate how bomber missions evolved from World War II through Vietnam. For the most part, the production relies on vintage documentary footage, the most notable example being material taken from the classic World War II documentary on the U.S. Eighth Air Force's most famous B-17, the
Memphis Belle. Utilizing films shot mostly for propaganda purposes, this video allows the viewer to essentially fly along on a raid over Germany with the crew of the
Memphis Belle; on a British World War II DeHavilland "Mosquito" light bomber as it attacks Nazi naval targets in Scandinavia; on an American B-29 as it flies in a massive raid over Tokyo; and on an American B-52 as it pummels Hanoi in 1972. As much of the footage seen was shot in actual combat, this documentary is filled with dramatic vignettes, including attacks from German fighters, scenes of bombs striking their targets far below, and some nerve-wracking scenes shot inside the bombers during the hazardous missions. This is a lively look at representative fliers that played a critical role in the history of air combat.
