I homeschool and I needed books for the ancient civilization course for the children this year. I am teaching seven of my children and they are between kindergarten and eighth grade. This book served as an excellent jumping off point for the older kids who utilized the internet links from the website to flesh out the material. The younger children learned a great deal and were not intimidated by the book. It was an excellent choice.

I have spent years searching out and reading ancient history books to my children. The Usborne Greek and Roman histories are the best single volume histories of their respective periods. What makes the Usborne books so good is that they jam a lot of information into their relatively thick books. The print is small and the accompanying illustrations are really well done. It is this marriage of written detail and plentify illustrations that makes this book work. If you are interested in still even more detail, make sure to check out any of Peter Connolly's great ancient history books.

This book is fantastic for using with Junior High kids on up. The information is clear and the drawings and photos are also well-done. The Internet links provide expansion without you having to search things out yourself. For adults who want a (very) quick review in basic terms, this is the book! I use it with my European History classes. The reading level is mid-range: excellent readers would probably find it too easy. Struggling readers might need some extra help in some parts. Overall, worth having as a source!
