A handsome math dictionary!!??,
By
This review is from: The Usborne Illustrated Dictionary of Math (Illustrated Dictionaries) (Paperback)
Something must be wrong with me--thanks to this book, I am an artist who is somehow enjoying browsing through a dictionary about MATH concepts!
I bought this book to help my 4th grade son who is very visual. There aren't as many illustrations as I'd hoped, but I guess you can only do so much visually with math! We received the book yesterday, and referred to it 3 times during the course of his homework that afternoon. Although very brief, the concepts we needed were clearly explained. There is a lot of information inside that appears to go way beyond 4th grade, so I imagine that the book will be helpful for some time to come. I remember searching frantically for the definition of "array" earlier this year. It isn't in this book, nor are Roman Numerals. But I'm still glad that I got the book because now math looks a little more interesting to my son because it is presented so colorfully. I think this has helped his attitude toward math a bit. (Having no practice problems to solve also improves his attitude toward this book!) For us, this book is not only very pleasing to look at, it's also been helpful so far. (Our math priorities are obviously skewed!)

Excellent Precalculus Summary,

This review is from: The Usborne Illustrated Dictionary of Math (Illustrated Dictionaries) (Paperback)
Although this is not what I would define as a math dictionary, it is an excellent book. It has wonderfully short and clear explanations of most of the precalculus topics, plus good examples. I haven't been able to find another book that is so complete and concise. I am using it to review for the Praxis II Mathematics exam and I am very happy I bought it. However, if you need a true college/high school math dictionary try the "HarperCollins Dictionary of Mathematics" or use Wikipedia.

I was just glancing through this book today and found an error that stuck out. Watch out on page 58; "volume of a triangular prism" (1/2 x 3x2)x5 answer should be 15cm3, not 5cm3.
I have not double checked the whole book yet, just letting you know to watch out, there might be more typos. Love the book otherwise, beautiful colors and nice graphics. GJ.

I purchased this book while studying to be a math teacher. To my surprise I accidentally purchased 2. I gave one to a fellow classmate who in turn shared the book with others in another class. By the end of the semester every student and the teacher had purchased one. The illustrations are outstanding and the definitions are well written. I highly recommend this book.

A sound addition to academic libraries at all levels,
By Charles Ashbacher (Marion, Iowa United States) - See all my reviews (TOP 500 REVIEWER) (VINE VOICE) (HALL OF FAME REVIEWER)

This book can serve as a quality resource for the basic definitions of mathematics; the illustrations are extremely valuable in reinforcing the textual explanations. It is split into the basic sections:
*) Numbers *) Shape, space and measures *) Algebra *) Handling data The sequence of presentation is not alphabetic but topical, starting with the most fundamental description of numbers and then working upward through the more difficult topics. This is very logical as it allows the reader to start at the beginning and move through, using it as a learning tool. Since it is indexed, the lack of alphabetical order poses no problem. I recommend this book to be included in the set of reference works in academic libraries at all levels.

This is an absolutely wonderful book to have around. Purchased from suesbooks.info It's like anything else. If you don't use math all the time, this will help you to get caught up to help your children. It explains it in a very easy simple way. It's a book that will be used in the middle schools often. For a math book, there are great illustrations.

The Illustrated Dictionary of Math would not be out of place in any middle school or high school math classroom or math lab. Even non-math intensive associate's and bachelor's students may find the Illustrated Dictionary of Math a great reference (not to be confused with the Illustrated Math Dictionary developed for elementary and middle school math students.)
Furthermore, the illustrations of geometric 2-D and 3-D shapes, the numerous graphs, and the Probability representations are outstanding. The Table of Contents include middle school Basic Math and Algebra 1 topics, and high school Geometry, Trigonometry basics, and basic Probability and Statistics curriculum. Besides a great math reference, the Illustrated Dictionary of Math would make a great math review for topics and curriculum in middle school, high school, and some college courses.
