Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Gr. 6--9. Even without referencing Usborne's dedicated Web site, where readers will find links to additional print, audio, and video material, this oversize book in the Archaeology series is chockablock with great stuff, beginning with some bits on archaeology in general, and ending with information on techniques used to date and preserve finds. In between, the authors conduct a concise but fascinating continent-by-continent survey, highlighting a wide range of discoveries (keyed to maps) that bind us to ancient civilizations. The graphics are excellent: maps; sharp, colorful photos; and charts all placed smartly on the pages and accompanied by captions that supply much of the informational content. There's not enough information about any one thing for report writers, but this will definitely set them off in the right direction and provide browsers and science buffs with plenty of curious, fascinating facts. An extensive "Landmarks in Archaeology" time line and a glossary conclude. Stephanie Zvirin

5.0 out of 5 stars An ideal introduction into all aspects of archaeology, March 4, 2005
This review is from: The Usborne Introduction to Archaeology: Internet-Linked (Usborne World Cultures) (Hardcover)
Expertly edited by Jane Chisholm, The Usborne Introduction To Archaeology: Internet-Linked is co-authored by Abigail Wheatley and Struan Reid with the assistance of archaeology consultants Timothy Taylor and Norah Moloney. Beautifully illustrated throughout by John Woodcock and Ian McNee, The Usborne Introduction To Archaeology: Internet-Linked ably provides young readers with an ideal introduction into all aspects of archaeology including techniques, sites and finds. With the provision of numerous and thematically appropriate links to websites, children can enjoy and learn from virtual activities and tours. From unwrapping a virtual mummy, to deciphering ancient writings, to reconstructions of ancient buildings and artifacts, young readers will find The Usborne Introduction To Archaeology: Internet-Linked to be fun, informative, and provide hours upon hours of educational experiences. It should be noted that a computer or having computer access is not essential because as a reference resource on the subject of archaeology, this book is complete and self-contained. Ideal as a classroom curriculum supplement, homeschooling, or just as an afternoon's pastime, The Usborne Introduction To Archaeology: Internet-Linked should be a part of every school and community library Archaeology Studies collection

4.0 out of 5 stars Very sweetly by Abigail Wheatley, March 5, 2007

This review is from: The Usborne Introduction to Archaeology: Internet-Linked (Usborne World Cultures) (Hardcover)
Can I find a fault in this very well written and edited book?
It breaks the American Clovis first tide of 40 years,
and does so on a 5th grade level with pictures.
It's a book that I would give to my own children
to read and learn about human civilization or lack of it.
There we have my major problem
with the book: that it doesn't present humans
as living and breathing and fighting,
but as ashes from graves. In one page is shows a man
who was executed and buried in a bog without
any comment on the society or times that would produce such remains
or that they weren't all that uncommon as to the types of bog burials.
The point is that the book may be artificially sweet by modern standards
of fact about human nature.
