I was given this book Reader's Digest Use the Right Word: Modern Guide to Synonyms and Related Words, Lists of Antonyms, Copious Cross-References, a Complete and Legible forty years ago and I still find it useful. So useful that I've purchased copies for each of my children and grandchildren when they started college.

The book jacket describes, better than I can, what you'll find inside: "Over 1,000 essays that define, compare, and contrast 6,000 synonyms and related words." These essays do exactly that: they tell us the shades of meaning for related words so we may chose the appropriate one.

While the number of words included is only about 6,000 this book is the best tool for helping you select the right word.

Highly recommended.

I have owned this book for more than 2 decades. It has proved invaluable for understanding word meaning but also for understanding how similar words relate to each other in meaning. Excellent as a writing resource. Much better that a plain thesaurus.
