Of the MANY interior design, decorating, staging, redesign, etc...books I have read this one stands out for several reasons. First of all I found it refreshingly different and remarkably useful. It is basically a book on redesigning using what you already have. It's for the folks who simply want to know how to make their homes comfortable and inviting without, if possible, spending a penny. It IS possible. Or for those who may have just moved and can't seem to figure out how to arrange their existing furniture into the new space allowed, or for those who have lived in the same place for years and just can't seem to figure out how to get things just right. It's not full of beautiful, glossy, prepared by a professional photographer, photos of rooms in 1 million dollar homes. The photos are black and white and look a lot like what most of us actually live in. The photos are functional and show what they need to to illustrate the point, but the photos are not why you read the book. It is full of practical tips and techniques, each one thoroughly explained and illustrated, and in my opinion, goes well beyond just the basics. Even though written in a way that anyone can easily understand, those who finish the book will have a firm grasp on things such as Balance, Cohesion, Focal Points, Lighting, and Accessorizing. Of course knowing how to hang artwork correctly and make a bed look great is always nice to know and is explained, but this book really does serve a unique purpose and goes way beyond what is normally provided in a home decor book. In my opinion it is a rare gem. If you are even the slightest bit uncomfortable in any room in your home I have no doubt, after reading this book, that you will feel motivated to rearrange some things (knowing why), and when finished you will be so proud of what you have done that you will invite your friends and family over to see what you accomplished. Have fun making your house a home!

This is one of the best home decorating/self-help type books I've read. While it does provide examples of configurations in which the author/designer added/bought items for a finished look, the overwhelming bulk of the book really focuses on just what it says: Using what you already have.

It mostly talks about furniture placement, traffic flow, clutter matters, prints, furniture height, etc.

It covers a wide range of rooms from the odd-shaped "L" to other things may not use often 'fireplaces' a room that's too big or strangely shaped.

The advice is practical and you'll find yourself using the basic rules over and over again!

I just wished more pics were up to date and some of the furniture, in my opinion was just downright ugly. I wasn't sure if it was to help the reader focus on the function more than the form or what?

Even though this was written several years ago the ideas are still very practical. I really like the before and after format.
