Used Math by Clifford E. Swartz, is a reference work for the college science instructor or student in search of a quick explanation of the mathematics found in the first two years of the college science curriculum. The book provides numerous examples that are drawn from actual situations encountered in science courses.

The book covers a broad range of subjects, including reporting and analyzing uncertainty, units and dimensions, graphs, the simple functions of applied math, statistics, quadratic and high power equations, and simultaneous equations. Other chapters are devoted to determinants, vectors, complex numbers, calculus-differentiation, integration, series and approximations, common differential equations, and differential operators.

Used Math contains many useful reference tables and summaries of formulas and techniques.

Editorial Reviews

About the Author

Clifford E. Swartz (1925 -2010) was a founding member of the physics department faculty at Stony Brook University (State University of New York at Stony Brook) and editor for almost 30 years of The Physics Teacher, a monthly journal published by the American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT).

Swartz was legendary for his lectures, demonstrations, and enthusiasm for teaching physics. He was widely known for his efforts to change the teaching of science, especially physics, so that students from elementary school through college would learn by doing experiments rather than passively watching teacher demonstrations and lectures. He authored or co-authored more than 30 books, most of them physics books and textbooks.

Dr. Swartz was a 1945 graduate of the University of Rochester, where he earned his PhD in physics in 1951. Awards included: Oersted Medal and the Melba Newell Phillips Award, both presented by AAPT, and the Outstanding Civilian Service Medal, presented by the Department of the Army. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

I have regularly used this handy paper back math book since I was a college engineering student in 1977. I have found it to be the most useful of all of the math books that I own. It is very useful for engineers, because it has very clear and useful sections on units and dimensions, and error analysis, which are not always taught so clearly in college. It has numerous useful diagrams and concise explanations to jog your memory on basic engineering mathematics such as algebraic functions, matrices, sinusoidal functions, exponential functions, gaussian distributions, analyticial geometry, and complex numbers. It also has very concise and clear sections on both differential and intergral calculus for us engineers who don't use them all the time and need a refresher. I have worn out my copy of the book and have decided that I need to buy a new copy.
