This kit is relatively easy to assemble with the only skill requirement being soldering.
Jason
The actual box is much smaller than I was expecting, and the assembly didn't come together as well as we'd hoped.

I actually had fun with this weekend project that now sits on my desk and distracts me from work.

I had a lot of fun with this. It is a kit and you are supposed to put it together. I actually had fun with this weekend project that now sits on my desk and distracts me from work.

Electrical engineer here... The box gets a lot of attention sitting at the edge of my desk at work. The shiny black box with a switch on it seems to beckon people over.

The assembly of the plastic box is a pain. I don't know why they would use nuts and bolts to attach a plastic plate parallel to another. It takes four hands and some skill to assemble. When I was done the lid sat ajar, so I had to make a few adjustments. It stays together well enough, but does seem a little flimsy. When the arm retracted it would bounce against the switch in the bottom flexing the plastic piece that the motor is attached to. I fixed this by bending the metal tab on the switch up, so that the motor turns off sooner. The instructions are not a good step by step method. I found it easier to do things in a different order and there were a few things I had to guess at. It doesn't use much power, I suspect it will be a long time before I need to put new batteries in it. I am satisfied with the quality. I did have to use a utility knife to clean up the edge of one panel. I assembled this in a little over an hour on a day that I was stuck at home sick. If you have the tools and like a challenge I would recommend this kit. Some patience is required.

Tools used: jeweler's screwdriver set, needle nosed pliers, soldering iron, solder, utility knife, wire strippers (small)

Works as advertised! It's a do-it-yourself build, so keep that in mind... you absolutely need extra tools to set this up, including:
- a soldering gun
- wire strippers
- philips screwdriver

I was aware of this before I made this purchase, and I'm an electronics enthusiast, so I have all of these tools plus a lot more on-hand. I read some previous bad reviews where people were complaining about needing the extra tools, but it states in the description that these are necessary and not included. I bought this for my kids (all under the age of 5), and they love this thing! Once again, please be aware that extra tools are needed to put this together. I really don't think it's fair that this is getting bad reviews because people aren't reading the details of this product.

The useless box arrived and within 10 minutes my 11yr old was excited to start putting it together. The directions for wiring the motor and switch were either backwards or I'm cross eyed, but once I figured out how to wire it everything else was easy as can be. I would guess even with the struggle wiring it (probably my fault) it still only took about 75 minutes to put together.

Everyone I show it to is REALLY hesitant to flip the switch thinking its going to explode, shock them, or worse. But once I get them to turn it on the smiles and laughs it creates are great.

To say there is some assembly required is an understatement. There are 16 self taping screws that are really really tiny. And the box material isn't the strongest stuff. I managed to crack one piece. Top it off, you have 12 individual solder points to deal with. If you have never soldered before, I suggest watching a video for tips. It's not hard to do if you attach it the proper way.

Overall it is a cool conversation piece, and if you enjoy building something then you will like this a lot.

Great product, bought it for my brother for a Christmas present. Word of warning, takes two hours to put together, and you'll need a soldering iron to do it. If you've never soldered anything before, it can be tricky and easy to ruin. Also, it's very easy to over-tighten the fasteners and crack the plastic.

BUT....if you put it together properly and solder it carefully, and get it properly adjusted, it's a great gift!

This was a very fun gift to give even though this is truly a useless box. This was delivered ontime and our son truly enjoyed putting this together.
