Book Description

December 16, 1998
Bridesmaid dresses -- what are they good for? We've got to pay for them, wear them, and then find a spot for them in the back of the closet. Our best women friends, suddenly transformed into tasteful-white-dress-wearing brides, tell us, "You'll be able to wear this bridesmaid dress again." But we know better.

101 Uses for a Bridesmaid Dress, tongue firmly in cheek, pokes fun at the hopelessly horrible dress that a bride asks her "court" to don. These whimsical illustrations and silly suggestions, from cocktail napkins and shower curtains, to pony blankets and frilly jock straps, are a hilarious antidote to the bridesmaid dresses we'll never wear again.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"This book is so much fun! Each suggestion about how to recycle a bridesmaid dress, from turning it into a taffeta hammock to using it as a beekeeper outfit, is hilarious. And the illustrations are totally charming. Give it to your bridesmaids to cheer them up!" -- Lois Smith Brady, author of Vows -- the book and New York Times Sunday column

5.0 out of 5 stars Wedding season is almost upon us again..., January 5, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: 101 Uses for a Bridesmaid Dress (Hardcover)
We all know it's easier for men, they only have to rent the tux. Simple and basic, the most they have to fear is a wild cumberbund, or the color white. But women by tradition are at the mercy of the bride and her taste for plunging necklines, ruffles, and fuschia. Unlike the returnable tux, post-wedding, women are left with a dress too sentimental to throw away; too horrific not to hide, and one familiar place to banish it. But Cindy Walker has sounded a call to bridesmaid dresses everywhere to emerge from their closets! In an age of recycling and Martha Stewart, 101 USES FOR A BRIDESMAID DRESS presents dozens of inane alternatives to entombment to counter every bride-to-be's insistent 'you'll wear it again.' This book presents bridal party fashion as the ultimate in chic, with the bridesmaid dress as: The perfect blind-date look, how to be dressed for dinner with your (soon to be ex-)lover's parents, or what to wear to insure you'll be turned down for that Grand Jury. Or as Walker offers, why not turn your bridesmaid dress into gifts like: spectacular baby clothes for the happy couple's first child, a new jogging suit for Grandma, or a custom jockstrap for the athlete in your life. From lavender taffeta to trampoline, and canary silk to surfboard cover, the nonsensical suggestions offered in this book belong in every bridesmaid's survival kit. Whether you need to humor attendants, cheer up a friend, or figure out some way to make use of those torrents of tulle, 101 USES FOR A BRIDESMAID DRESS is the perfect irreverent gift for the ladies in your life with whom you swap bridesmaid horror stories, or for whom you have picked out the most darling red, white, and blue sequined cocktail dresses for your Fourth of July Wedding.

5.0 out of 5 stars anyone who's ever been a bridesmaid should buy this book, January 20, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: 101 Uses for a Bridesmaid Dress (Hardcover)
The illustrations are so wonderful -- I love the cute little baby dressed in the ruffles and satin of cast-off bridesmaid dress. No matter what the bride says (or how nice she is), you won't wear it again! That's where this great collection of wacky ideas comes in. I loved it!

1.0 out of 5 stars I am Returning this Book, March 31, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: 101 Uses for a Bridesmaid Dress (Hardcover)
I anticipated "101 Uses..." to be lively, funny and relevant. The illustrations are contemporary and cute, but the humor is empty and pointless. Because it has no depth, this book can be "read" in a matter of seconds. I purchased it with the intention of giving to my bridesmaids. I am returning it because I don't want to insult their intelligence.
