Good for overall useage and details,

This seems to be a good book for overall daily use and configurations. I used it to configure a test lab for my MCSE testing. It helped me out in a pinch on some areas. Well worth the price I paid for it.

OK as a beginner's guide to Exchange Server,

I bought this book in a bit of rush about a year ago because I was starting a new contract with a company upgrading to 5.5, and my experience was with 4.0 and 5.0. For me this book told me nothing I could not find out for myself by a couple of hours playing with V5.5 or just reading the release notes. However a beginner may find it a reasonable introduction, but it isn't post MCSE material.

For stand alone Server only,

This book doesn't seem to cover in detail about our real world situation. That is -- having multiple Exchange servers with different versions throughout the organization. It does a great job explaining about each function within Microsoft Exchange administrator and Outlook. But lacks examples to help readers understand.

This book provides excellent summary of the networking aspects of exchange server and an introduction to its application-development capabilities. However, specific programming procedures are not covered.

Yikes, I can't believe I used this for my first install!,

Ok, so my first exchange install was 5.0 a couple of years back - but now owning both versions of the Using Exchange Server books and extensive Exchange Admin experience - I gotta tell ya - there has to be a better book out there. It seems that the layout and general reading of this book are almost identical to the earlier edition - dry, dry and dry. Missing real world issues with installation errors you may run into and common maintence proceedures that a typical Exchange Admin might follow.

Excellent book, covers the features of exchange in superb detail. There is no one book that will ever teach you everything about exchange but this book used in combination with Tony Redmonds exchange 5.5 planning and implementation guide will certainly get you well on your way to having an excellent overview of the subject.you can email me if you have any questions expat.muller@t-online.de cheers

Que doesn't usually disappoint....,

I administer a relatively small company's network and while some of the issues I have related to Exchange are also of a small scale this book was ineffective at answering even those questions. It was especially light on covering the integration of Exchange server with client-side software like Outlook 9x. Also, the importance of regular maintenance and how to perform said maintenance was grossly understated and glossed over. One might almost say misleading. Look elsewhere for answers.

Excellent for configuration/ nothing for troubleshooting,

I've found this book to be an excellent source for learning the basics of setting up and configuring exchange. However when your exchange server crashes and you have to recover, don't go running for this book. Almost nothing is mentioned about the utilities required to recover, i.e. ESEUTIL, ISINTEG etc. I'm currently looking for a good book to troubleshoot with.

Excellent coverage of exchange 5.5,

Great book. I see that one of the reveiewers has stated that the book doesn't cover exchange in a wan/production environment, I agree but my advice would always be to buy more than one book when dealing with a product has huge as exchange 5.5.This book covers detailed using exchange in a single domain environment. Their are excellent explanations on migrating from msmail and ccmail to exchange. Disaster recovery, mta parameters and good explanations on all of the connectors. If you are new to exchange I would recommend this as the first book to read, followed by the excellent Tony Redmond exchange planning guide.

Nothing that can't be found in MS's manuals.,

This review is from: Using Microsoft Exchange Server (Using ... (Que)) (Paperback)
Why bother? To me, the author seemed to have vitually no insights or experience to share with the reader. Virtually everything in here was a recapitulation of the basic Microsoft exchange manuals or information found online. I was astounded by the absolute lack of any new or useful information in this book. If you're hungry for information, this is like eating foam.
