Error-filled, poorly-written and non-useful,

This review is from: Using Microsoft Visual InterDev (Special Edition) (Paperback)
The publisher and author(s) should be embarrased to offer this book. A better book on the subject is "Using Visual InterDev 6" by Amundsen.

Non working examples and no structure,

This book did absolutely nothing to help me understand InterDev beyond what I figured out on my own with the product. I spent a weekend with it. I was a waste of money. I will only get pleasure from it when I use it instead of a Presto-Log in the fireplace next season.

A collection of articles that don't fit together.,

The book is a mess. About 16 authors put together a book with no structure or purpose. The reason such a large book contains so little information is that subjects are duplicated throughout the book. This one is a "STAY AWAY".

A good overview of the basic concepts,

I would rank myself as an intermediate web page creator, but a beginner as a web application developer. New to Visual InterDev, I find the book quite helpful on the basics of understanding the project workspace, code view, data link views, and other integration concepts for a data-driven web site. This is one of the few Que Special Edition books that actually provides more useful information than regurgitated marketing spiel. If you are a beginning or intermediate InterDev user, you can get a lot out of the book. Also, the CD has 8 online books, as well as lots of source clipart, software, and source code. I have found at least one source code omission (pubs.mdb), but the Que web site posted it for downloading.

Not Thorough Enough,

Billed as the "Most Complete Referece"... I pray not. I was specifically looking for a -How To- on integrating a database app to my web site using VI. It goes on at great length about doing it, doesn't parallel or explain the accompanying samples on CD very well and NEVER says how to implement the project, that is, get it onto the ISP server. Other areas that I have tried to explore are similarly lacking in the final pieces of the puzzle to put VI into action on a working Web Site.

A fairly decent reference for the basics.,

While it lacks in some areas, especially in ASP and code, it does cover the basics pretty well. I think it spends way too much time covering basic database development, however, and not enough on putting that database in a web application and making it work. A decent book, but could be better

A fair overview of Visual InterDev.
The book has many authors ... and it shows. Very uneven from chapter-to-chapter. Needs a strong editor to bring consistency.
I encountered a number of errors in the book and the enclosed CD

General recap of the product itself.,
By A Customer
This review is from: Using Microsoft Visual InterDev (Special Edition) (Paperback)
Special Edition using VI is basically a summation of the many technologies surrounding VI. It talks about the many wizards built into VI, the different products that make up the Visual Tools '97 Suite (ie Music Producer, Image Composer), etc. Though there is some (limited) sample code, it is nothing a good programmer couldn't figure out, and a newbie couldn't generate from the wizards. I think for serious developers like myself, this book would not be a good reference. It doesn't discuss much about the hard core programming side of the product. Would be sufficient enough for a beginner
