This is the second of Mr. Wade's books on the Russian language I have bought. At first, I shied away from them because of their cost. But once I bought his comprehensive book on Russian grammar, I realized the quality of his workmanship - it is, undoubtedly, the HIGHEST quality!!
I admit to being a student of linguistics - at least two of its areas of focus. And Mr. Wade's books provide me with a depth of understand, while also being a very clear and concise presentation of the material.
You won't learn to speak or write the language for the purpose of everyday communication. But, I think you will learn how to correctly use the language - which is my intent.
Don't buy this book as one of your first books for learning Russian! But, once you decide you are serious about USING the language correctly, I think you should consider Mr. Wade's books.
FWIW, my first language is English.

What I love about this reference is that each entry has a lot of detail showing you how to use each word in context. What I don't like so much is that there just aren't as many entries as I wish there were, but nonetheless it's worth having.

Yeah, you want to find a substitute word for some word that you have used in every paper since you started studying Russin. It's getting boring. However, you have to remember that if you need another word, it had better be the right one or you can look like a symashedshii/aya chelovek and you'll NEVER live that one down. This book is excellent in getting the right word and, so many times, has lead me on a trip through vocabulary land because this "other" meaning has caught my eye and I just "have" to go and look that one up and then another and another. You can fill hours with this book and feel refreshed and KNOW that you have the "perfect" word to make your own Russian sizzle on the barbie.
