Now in an all-new second edition, Using Visual Basic with AutoCAD continues to encourage readers to explore the customization power they can unleash using Visual Basic to automate AutoCAD 2000. Over 500 pages - featuring a wealth of step-by-step examples presented in the book and on the companion CD-ROM - offer expert instruction in using both Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) and stand-alone Visual Basic (VB). Ideal for programmers of all abilities;, from the novice through the expert, Using Visual Basic with AutoCAD provides unparalleled coverage of topics ranging from simple customization of AutoCAD commands, to building impressive stand-alone applications, through debugging programs. Part of the popular Programmer's Reference Series from Autodesk Press, Using Visual Basic with AutoCAD begins by familiarizing readers with Visual Basic environment and then delves immediately into creating and modifying objects as well as extracting data from drawings. Subsequent chapters illustrate how to create and distribute real-world applications; how to communicate with other applications using dynamic data exchange (DDE) and object linking and embedding (OLE); how to exchange AutoCAD data with popular spreadsheet, word-processing and database applications; and how to debug programs. (Note: While prior knowledge of AutoCAD is assumed, no previous Visual Basic experience is required to use this book successfully)

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

The second edition of this book includes approximately 40% additional material over the first edition, plus numerous updates and enhancements. It covers AutoCAD 2000, AutoCAD 2000i, and R14, while the first edition of this book was written solely for AutoCAD R14 -- the first release of AutoCAD to incorporate the Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) programming environment. The AutoCAD 2000 release included several valuable revisions to the Object Model, which are highlighted in this book.

As with the first edition, this book covers all of the key topics for AutoCAD users interested in unleashing the customization power of Visual Basic and VBA. It takes a "how-to" approach and includes real-world examples to illustrate how to create and modify objects, extract drawing information, exchange information with other Windows applications such as Microsoft Office products, and much more. Introductory chapters on the Visual Basic language can help the novice programmer and serve as a reference for experienced programmers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Learn at your own pace., January 13, 2001
By
Marie Rath (Phoenix, AZ USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Using Visual Basic with AutoCAD 2000 (Autodesk's Programmer) (Paperback)
An absolute must for the AutoCAD user who has never programmed using the Visual Basic for Applications language, and a stepping-stone to advanced programming for those who have automated other applications (like the Microsoft Office products) using VBA. Each chapter is presented as a lesson on a different aspect of automating AutoCAD, complete with lecture and samples of the code involved (provided on a companion CD). It's like taking a college course on the basics of AutoCAD VBA, minus the walk across campus.

4.0 out of 5 stars It's all about getting started., December 18, 2000

This review is from: Using Visual Basic with AutoCAD 2000 (Autodesk's Programmer) (Paperback)
Andy Roe has proven he has depth of knowledge in the VBA field but he has also done what few technical authors do - pay attention to the "getting started" user. There's something for both expert and novice in this substantially expanded edition.

The book took a while to ship which I didn't mind. However, I was surprised when I received the book and found there were highlighted sections. The description was for "Like New".
