Book Description

November 15, 2008
The story of the USS Arizona encompasses far more than the milli-second BOOM! that split her hull and snuffed out the lives of 1177 men aboard her. The huge battleship led a fascinating life before her demise, and--as a poignant symbol of the attack that thrust the United States into World War II--has impacted millions of lives since. She lays where she sank, in the silt of Pearl Harbor, spanned now by a graceful white memorial that pays tribute to her dead. MacKinnon Simpson's newest book, USS Arizona  -  Warship Tomb   Monument, pays tribute to the ship, her crews, and her symbolism through the years. Packed with many rarely-before seen images, the book includes such unlikely characters as Elvis Presley, whose benefit concert helped trigger the fund-raising for the Memorial, and Henry Williams, a three-year-old boy who placed the first bolt in her keel in 1915 and read a newspaper by the light of her raging fires as a lieutenant at Pearl Harbor in 1941. USS Arizona  -  Warship Tomb Monument tells a story that needed to be told, of why the Arizona is still so important to people from around the world who trek to visit her each year.

Editorial Reviews

About the Author

Author MacKinnon Simpson first visited the USS Arizona Memorial with his wedding party in 1970, aboard the Admiral's Barge, courtesy of then-CINCPAC Adm. Donald "Red Dog" Davis. It was an experience that was both fascinating and haunting, and one that ironically brought to life the death of the ship and most of her crew. He has returned many times. A native of the tiny village of Pottersville, New Jersey, as a small child Simpson immersed himself in history, discovering Leni-Lenape flint arrowheads and a Revolutionary War-era belt buckle in the woods and fields around the family's 18th century farmhouse. An alumnus of Princeton University, Simpson stepped off the corporate ladder in 1982 and began writing full-time. "This book - and Hawaii Hmoefront: Life in the Islands During World War II - were both labors of love as I have long had a passion about the war here in the Islands where it started. The impact of the bombs at Pearl Harbor were not nearly so great as the impact of the social and economic changes caused by the war, eventually culminating in Statehood and a very different social fabric." Simpson has two grown children, Malia and Alika, neither of whom have inherited any of his foibles - astonishing, considering the sheer number available.

Mr. Simpson has done a wonderful job. He has captured the history and given new life to the most famous battleship this country has ever produced. It is a tribute to all the sailors, and men and women who had anything to do with the Arizona's distinguished life. To me and my family it will always be a treasure. My father served on the Arizona till he received an appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy in early 1941. I am sure anyone who loves Naval history or just loves our country would be proud to own this terrific piece of history.
