AN OUTSTANDING REFERENCE SOURCE FOR ALL WOMEN WITH FIBROIDS,
By A Customer
This review is from: Uterine Fibroids: What Every Woman Needs to Know (Paperback)
I was told to have a hysterectomy by several doctors for my numerous growing fibroids. I was determined to find an alternative. Luckily I came across Dr. Stringer's book and it changed my life. This is the definitive book on fibroids, encompassing everything any woman could possibly want to know about fibroids; what makes them grow, current treatments, all about laparascopic surgery and other kinds of surgery, what to expect from surgery, etc. Dr. Stringer takes the fear out of the unknown and after you read this book you can consider yourself highly informed on the subject. The bottom line is not to live in denial as I did for years, fearing a hysterectomy. The fibroids only got bigger, and more numerous. There are alternatives to hysterectomy and you can get your life back again, saying "so long" to feeling physically awful. On February 15, 1999 I underwent a successful laparascopic myomectomy performed by Dr. Stringer and had 5 rather large fibroids removed. I was back to work in a week and feel 20 pounds lighter. I urge every woman who has been told to undergo a hysterectomy for fibroids to read Dr. Stringer's book and present this book to any doctor who discusses hysterectomy for fibroids. THANKS, DR. STRINGER!

A MUST READ if you have a uterine fibroid tumor.,

This review is from: Uterine Fibroids: What Every Woman Needs to Know (Paperback)
Dr. Stringer's book "Uterine Fibroids : What Every Woman Needs to Know" gave me the information I needed when faced with a serious medical condition. I was diagnosed with a large fibroid tumor, and when my symptoms became problematic, I searched for information on the topic. Although this is a common medical condition, there are very few books available that even discuss the topic. I obtained several opinions from local physicians which were mostly the same: "have a hysterectomy". Dr. Stringer's book informed me of other alternatives which are much less invasive and have a much shorter recovery time.I was able to undergo a laparoscopic myomectomy (which was performed by Dr. Stringer in Chicago) whereby I was back on my feet the same day and was able to resume normal activity in less than a week. A hysterectomy would have had me in the hospital for several days with a 4-6 week recovery time. Since I am only 36 years old I also still have the option to have another child which would have been gone with a hysterectomy. I credit Dr. Stringer's book with providing new information that I could not get in any other book or from other physicians. If anyone has a fibroid tumor they should read this book and seek treatment early as alternative treatments are most beneficial when applied before the tumor becomes too large. In addition, if you have symptoms (such as pelvic pain, or heavy bleeding) Dr. Stringer's book "Uterine Fibroids : What Every Woman Needs to Know" is a MUST READ.

A must read if you have been diagnosed with fibroids!,

This review is from: Uterine Fibroids: What Every Woman Needs to Know (Paperback)
I found Dr. Stringer's book extremely comprehensive and easy-to-understand. And, it proved to be a great source of knowledge when discussing my fibroid condition with various doctors. Unfortunately, the majority of gynecologists still recommend hysterectomy for the treatment of fibroids despite other alternatives which are now available. This book alerted me to these other potential treaments in a very clear and concise manner. I would highly recommend that any woman diagnosed with fibroids read this book.

Five years ago I had a myomectomy that found 2 grapefruit sized and 13 golf ball sized fibroids. I've begun to have problems again and have since found have 5 new ones...great.!This book gave terrific and real-life examples of what to expect. The only thing that wasn't clearly articulated is how many times can the procedures described be administered. My doctor says, "he only goes in once"?I'd love to get them lasered while they are still small enough. My heart goes out to all that have to read this book because they are affected by them...they are less than fun.

Best book on Fibroids I have ever read!!!,

After being told I have multiple large fibroid tumors that need to be removed, I got this book. What a wonderful resource it has been for me in evaluating my treatment options. He has current information about all the latest techniques and medications. I just wish that I could have him perform my surgery but he is in Chicago. Please read this book. I have not been able to find any other helpful books on fibroids. Just because they are not cancerous tumors, doesn't mean that you should not take them and their treatment seriously.

This is a must read for any woman who is diagnosed with fibroids. This books lets you know there are other opitions available to you besides a hestorectomy (the option that's always presented to you). Although, I have a doctor that presented all my options to me there are some that don't. And before you make a decision to do something (like having a hestorectomy) and regret it later take another step and do some research you owe it to yourself. Remember this I was properly and throughly informed and I still did some research and I was happy to find out my doctor was right on point. Note: never be afraid to ask questions it can only help you better understand you can never know to much especially about your health.

Mostly Good Info - Super Illustrations - Worth It,

The illustrations are what really make this book. Dr. Stringer (may he rest in peace) gives a tremendous amount of useful information. Unfortunately, he fails to give citations to support his statements - and makes do with a bibliography at the end of the book (who can tell what supports which without reading ALL of the sources in their entirety & if you're going to do that, why bother to read the book?). He does clearly (honestly) state that some things are based on observations in his own practice or just his personal opinion - but it's frequently hard for me to sort out what's science and what's personal opinion/experience. For instance, he has a strong opinion on birth control pills and fibroids, which appears to be contrary to much of the science -- so I wish he'd referenced that better. Feeling that he could have been dead wrong on one point, makes other information in the book suspect in my mind. The Stringer book has a nice respectful attitude toward the patient-reader; it comes off as an honest effort to educate patients, help them deal with fibroids and make treatment decisions; it makes some good explanations; and by far best of all it has those FANTASTIC illustrations. These illustrations made fibroids really come into focus in my head. So, I take the Stringer text with a serious shake of salt - since I know some of it is opinion rather than fact & I often can't tell which is which - and I LOVE THE ILLUSTRATIONS. My opinion: well worth the price for the illustrations alone.

What I reviewed was the great reviews each person has given this book. Each had been given the choice of having a hysterectomy, but found other alternatives. For those that have reviewed this book, does it tell you what you should do if the doctor says surgery is not an option, unless you're having extreme pain and heavy menstration (to where your going through a pad an hour). I having discomfort, but nothing serious.
