By trade I am a machinist and after 15 years of experience i have learned a lot about quality control. If I had machined a part for a customer as bad as this lighter, I would have been fired.

After two days of light use the cap will not tighten to the lighter because the threads on the cap do not match the threads on the housing. This means I can't leave fluid in the lighter which means it cannot be used. It is obvious True Utility let this product bypass quality control inspection which is unacceptable. However, I will make a new housing for the lighter and continue to use it.

I cannot not recommend this lighter to anyone.

Amazon did a great job packing and shipping the products and I received everything a day early.

I heard about this keychain attachment on one of those 'gear blog' type websites. This sounded like the perfect fire source for someone who doesn't smoke, but does light the occasional bon fire or candle and also wants a convenient emergency fire source.

The FireStash arrived a couple days after my other Amazon products in the same order, but those were shipped directly from an Amazon warehouses and this did not, so that is understandable. The FireStash is really high quality, no blemishes on the metal, fits on my keychain well, and was easy to fill with zippo-type lighter fluid after I bought some at a corner store.

I then had a problem with the screw-on part. To give you a visual, the keychain part is the cap to the lighter, and the lighter has threads to screw into the cap. There is an o-ring on the lighter to ensure that when the lighter is properly screwed on that the lighter fluid does not evaporate and/or maybe it helps with making the screw tight as well.

However, I noticed that if you screw the lighter into the cap, there is no stopping point, it just gets tighter and tighter until it resets on a lower thread and becomes loose again. Not sure if this was specifically related to how I was screwing it on or whatever, but it was difficult to ensure that the lighter was tightly and securely screwed into the cap. This led the lighter to fall out of the cap at some point on my early ownership and now it's gone.

Overall, really great idea for a great price, but either I'm doing something wrong or the connection between the cap and lighter needs to be re-thought. I would love to give it 5 stars, but I can't since I only owned it for a week before it fell off my keychain.

In a sort of Boy Scout way, I like to always carry a knife and a means of making fire, but as a nonsmoker I rarely actually use the means of making fire. Zippo lighters dry out within about a week, so for people who don't smoke they are not very useful. I hoped that this would be better. It IS better in that it has some degree of seal, and doesn't dry out as quickly--but it still dries out, it just takes a month rather than a week. The machining of the threads is low-quality and the threads don't seem durable. The rubber seal is a little too small and weak. Overall, it's a mediocre implementation of a nice idea.

You're better off just buying a $1.29 butane lighter from a gas station, or a waterproof match box with strike-anywhere matches.

I love this thing! Filled it with some ZIPPO lighter fluid and it works on the first try every time. I imagine that the 12oz bottle of fluid I got, will last me the rest of my life using this thing in backpacking/camping situations. Also, the lighter will only accept a thimble sized amount of fluid and I haven't had to refill it yet. WIN WIN!

I did make some small modifications to it. I don't know if they were completely necessary, but I like to mess with stuff.

1) I added a bit of teflon tape to the exterior of the fluid "tank" insert. This was to put a better seal on the tank so that the fluid won't evaporate away.

2) I trimmed the wick so that only about 2-3mm is visible. I did this because the flame was lighting up about 3 inches high. Now it is only a small half inch flame :)

This is the tiniest lighter you will ever find, but it's got a full-sized flame! I love that the o-ring seals the lighter off, so the lighter fluid doesn't evaporate away before you go to use it.

I have another tiny pill-case the same size, and the other day, I discovered that it had unscrewed and dropped onto the floor. While this hasn't happened with my lighter, I want to caution anyone who buys it to make sure it stays in a pocket or purse. (I keep my keys on a clip on my belt loop during the day at work). I'm not saying this lighter will unscrew and fall out, just that anything that has threads can work themselves loose with vibration/movement over time, and this is no exception. I have now moved this where it won't be lost if it unscrews.

The price was good, and I can't wait until my next hiking trip to surprise my friends with it.

Also, a tip that I recommend for anyone who is a "prepper" or wants to purchase this for emergencies, take an extra flint, and put it inside the lighter, on top the felt that absorbs the lighter fluid. Just remember it's there when you go to refill it so it doesn't drop out. This way, if you have an emergency where you are using this alot, you have an extra flint you can install at the ready.

I also found a small "fuel storage" cylinder that is slightly larger than the lighter, that also is keyring based. If you're going to use this for hiking, camping, or prepping, I recommend you get that as well, and clip them together. You will have a spare flint, and plenty of fuel for a good amount of time. And of course, you have to test/use both of them BEFORE the emergency or hiking trip. And I would always have a 2nd or 3rd means of starting a fire as a backup...but this is the greatest 1st method!
