Great album, not the best in the world,
By
This review is from: Utopia (Audio CD)
3 years after the release of her power-pop filled debut album, Belinda's back with a more "mature" sophomore album, UTOPIA. Much of this album is filled with the same power pop kind of music from the first album, but also includes a mixture of some dance, slow, and R&B type of music. Some of these genres that are new to Belinda hurt the album, though. All in all, it's decent, but some songs are a matter of letting them grow on you.
Here's the rundown 1. UTOPIA - sort of pop/rock with the 80s style syntesizer. Very short; about 3:00 total. 4/5 STARS 2. NI FREUD NI TU MAMA - probably the feature song from this album. This one is more dance/disco like with some rock elements in it. Not sure why she calls this one Ni Freud ni tu Mama since i heard her say it in the song about one time. Still, this is probably the strongest song on the album and is her first single release. 5/5 STARS 3. SEE A LITTLE LIGHT - a slow tempo song in English. The song starts out well but it's a bit awkward at the chorus ("I can see a little Light") with her voice octave changes. Somehow tho, this one grew on me. 4/5 STARS 4. BELLA TRACION - starts out sort of dance like but it's one of those rock/pop songs. It has great lyrics IMO and the song is pretty catchy. I think it could have done without some of those 80s style synthesizers, but it's still catchy. One of my favorites. 5/5 STARS 5. CONTIGO O SIN TI - Pop. Definately pop and somewhat catchy. Not one of her better songs, though. 3/5 STARS 6. ALGUIEN MAS - Rock. It starts out like No Doubt's "Don't Speak" with haunting lyrics, then jumps into a power-rock chorus. I think the way she sings the chorus, though, is a bit awkward, like she has trouble switching the octaves so quickly. Still a good song. 3/5 STARS 7. QUIEN ES FELIZ - this one has the same elements as Bella Corazon. It's pop/rock and has a great driving beat. One of my favorites. 5/5 STARS. 8. PUDO SER TAN FACIL - rock ballad. Great lyrics. This one probably has more potential to be a single release. this song is more along the lines of the material in her first album release. 4/5 STARS 9. NOCHE COOL - Pop. Teen pop, rather. The rap part by Belinda sounds pretty stupid, though and it ruins the song. The whole song is a bit strange, but it grew on me as well. 3/5 STARS (for bad rapping). 10. ANTIGA SOLEDAD - Ballad. There's no rock involved this time. This one is pretty and a bit more enjoyable than "see a little light." The lyrics are really nice and she sings it well. 4/5 STARS 11. GOOD GOOD - R&B/Pop - this song is not very good. It doesn't really qualify as reggaeton, more like R&B. The chorus and the synthesizers bother me too much in this song, especially the "eres mi Good good." Not a strong song at all. 2/5 STARS 12. LUZ SIN GRAVEDAD - The spanish version of "see a little light." Sounds nicer in Spanish but still the problems with her changing octaves. Still a pleasant song to hear. 4/5 STARS 13. NEVER ENOUGH - This song IS enough for me, thank you. Probably the worst song in the entire album. It has this awful "cha ching" by Belinda at the beginning and throughout. It's a wanna-be R&B pop song. The worst part of the song is the LYRICS. "Where is my dog." "Where is my car." Just flat out terrible! 1/5 STARS. As you can see, the album starts off well then just gradually decreases in quality. It's all a matter of whether you let songs grow on you or not. Still good to pick up this decent album. Let's hope it doesn't take another 3 years for Belinda to put out another album!

Although I dont like Belinda, I really like her music. This cd is AWSOME!!! I really like her first album but this one is more mature and way better. There is no doubt that she has an aswome voice! and she proofs it in this cd. one of her best songs, in my opinion, is NI FREUD NI TU MAMA, LUZ SIN GRAVEDAD, SEE A LITTLE LIGHT, and my favorite, PUDO SER TAN FACIL!
I recommend everyone to buy this album, you won't be disappointed!!!

My Best CD!,

I cannot undestand a word of spanish, but for this CD you don't need to. Belinda's voice is all that matters. This cd is the best I own (along with my Instant Star Soundtracks)She is such a wonderful singer, and a few of her songs have both Spanish and English. I love every single song on this CD, but my personal favorite is Contigo O Sin Ti (which translates into With You Or Without You) I LOVE the music. This song is both english and spanish, I listen to it non-stop. I can't wait for her next CD (that is hoping she makes another). YOU ROCK BELINDA!

On First Listen, Not as Good as Her 2003 Debut,

Let me start off by saying that the only Spanish I know is what I learned in two years of high school classes. I'm not a fluent speaker (or listener) of the language. That being said, you don't need to know what Belinda is singing about. Just listen to how good her songs are...
What's wrong with this album is what's wrong with so many pop albums - too much programming, too little real musicianship. What's right with this album? A lot, actually. Belinda's first album, "Belinda", was a huge and pleasant surprise for me. I bought it only knowing her from the "Amigos por Siempre" TV show. Of course, I expected R&B or Dance music. What I got was amazing, well-crafted, melodic power pop. 1997 Hanson on steroids. Great stuff -- every track. Flash to October 3, 2006. "Utopia" arrives, I grab it on the day of issue. The material - the songs - continue more or less in the tradition of her debut album. The only detectible difference being the aforementioned overproduction. Still, very enjoyable -- a 4-star effort, and deservedly so. Buy the CD. Let's hope for two things: First, that Belinda will take less than three years for her next album and second, let's hope for a different production team that will allow her wonderful music to breathe a little.

A surprise for your expectations and worth buying,

I first saw/heard Belinda on Christmas Day 2006 with her singing "Ni Freud Ni Tu Mama" on TV. I didn't know who she was, but a couple weeks later I heard the song again and when I found out who it was, I decided to buy the cd with the expectation that only that song would be worth listening to. I'm happy to say that there are a lot of really good songs on the cd, none quite as driven as "Ni Freud" but still likable anyway. The overall mix of sounds that she sings on her album are eclectic, but they don't define her style or sound definitively, and with the exception of "Ni Freud" none of them make her stand out as an artist in any particular genre, probably because this is the trend for many "crossover debuts" of artists in the Latin music community (spanish and english songs) almost as if they are trying to cater to too many listeners.
Even still, this album for the most part is a solid production, good listening to and it was worth my money even as a non-latino. Check it out!

I really was excited for this album and I was a little disappointed to say that her debut album was so much better than this. I cannot believe this took her so long to release. I really loved the first album because the music was a mix of pop, rock and dance.
This second album has some songs similar to the first album except now she has som R&B and Reggaetton songs which are TERRIBLE!!! I mean come on who is she kidding? This album is NOT more mature. I am sorry to say her debut album sounded more mature than the second. Utopia is good not great lets hope she REALLY TRULY matures for her third attempt because she has a gorgeous voice which should not be wasted on RIDICULOUS R&B Reggaeton songs.

Utopia is an amazing album with great melodies, phenomenal lyrics, and a voice so sweet and raw, it'll send chills down your spine
this an amazing Cd. it literally sounds like Pat Benatar singing in Spanish. there's no shame in that. Since Mrs. Benatar has served up her rock hits back in her days. But Belinda can also be reconized in a class of her own. thanx to the powerfull ballads and rock anthems that Utopia has to offer. Belinda has definatley found a fan for life. I FRICKEN LOVE THIS CD. i listen to it every day. and its for sure in my top 10 list of favorite Cd's of all time. and this is coming from someone who owns over 134 explicetly GORGEOUS cd's!!!! Belinda has what it takes to definatley become a legend, and this cd proves it! BUY THIS CD!!! you will not regret it |
