I had read nearly all of Uzumaki before this deluxe edition was revealed, but I just had to have it. The book was shipped through Amazon and was actually fairly well packaged (No wrap though. If Amazon would at least take the time to wrap books in some sort of protective paper/bubble wrap it would make many customers VERY happy).

The cover is gorgeous, featuring spot gloss on the title and the blurb on the back cover. What makes this book even cooler are the full-color endpapers and that it is presented in traditional manga format (reads right to left). The book is a complete collection of ALL of the Uzumaki comics including the lost chapter Galaxies and a new comic afterword!
While I am unsure of how the binding will hold up (it looks to be a combination glued/sewn binding) I am overall extremely pleased with the treatment of the material. Granted I would have gone crazy over an Omnibus edition that could lay flat from any page, I know this is likely the closest we fans will come.

Given the fabulous frills added into this book (random color pages and color chapter pages, excellent cover, etc) I must highly suggest this book to anyone interested in supernaturally charged, mind (&body!) bending horror. Author Junji Ito weaves an incredible tale full of shocks, scares, false hope, and intensely horrific images of humanity in conflict with forces it cannot understand. Add to that a satisfying conclusion (no spoilers!) and you have one hell of a read.

Uzumaki is an unforgettable story that is amazing, disturbing, and unexpectedly thought-provoking. If you haven't read it already, buy this immediately.

By the length and open-close nature of the story, Uzumaki was in need of an omnibus. I'm sure there were omnibus iterations in the past but this the first I was aware of. Unlike many omnibus manga compilations, the book itself is not hastily put together with inconsistent gluing, paper-covers, and a flimsy back (I'm looking at you, Azumanga Daioh). The glue is consistent throughout all of the pages, the back is sturdy, and it's hardcover. It's built to last.

I give it 5/5 across all boards, and the price is irresistible. I'd expect to pay at least double for this quality.

extra: I read someone received a copy with a slightly dented spine, the one I received was as mint as it gets. The packaging I got with Amazon Prime was just Uzumaki in a box just big enough to hold the book. No bubble-wrap, no-nothing. I suppose this is kind of a hit-and-miss thing and isn't really a comment on the product itself.

I am happy to say that I am extremely satisfied with this purchase, both with the story and the amazing, high quality hardcover treatment for this deluxe edition. I am glad that I preordered, I do not often do so, and having it waiting for me the day of release was nice. I had the 3 regular volumes circling my wish list for some time now, and the release of the deluxe omnibus seemed like the perfect opportunity to finally jump on board. The art and the writing compliment the psychologically and also physically disturbing story, which will please both horror and/or manga fans. Each chapter takes a very creative approach on how the spiral horror manifests in its many forms during the disturbing events in this town. The color artwork on the inlays for inner and outer covers are also incredible. If you are considering purchasing and are taking your time to read this review, then you are likely already interested/invested enough that you will not be disappointed!

5 stars for the manga, 4 stars for amazon for not including any packing material in the shipping box like they normally do to prevent damage, especially with these kind of deluxe hardcovers, thus it came with a slightly bent corner, but overall in good shape. Maybe because of the cheaper price it didn't quality for high quality treatment, but it IS high quality and should be treated as such.

Usually, and as opposed to horror movies, I am quite cynical of the power of comics to truly terrify the reader. Though there are good and bad works in every medium, I never really have found myself really creeped out when reading something of this genre. I have certainly found good stories with a creepy atmosphere, but nothing truly memorable. So when I purchased Junji Ito’s Uzumaki I didn’t really expect anything in particular, and certainly nothing memorable. Oh, how wrong I was. I had heard of the brilliance of this comic and Junji Ito, but I had never hoped to get to read something this good.

Whilst I didn’t find Uzumaki truly horrifying (though I rarely do, probably a side effect of having read too much of this genre), it was definitely a lot better than what I expected. It is creepy from start to finish, and not only that, is practically impossible to put down. It features a town that, rather than being haunted by a ghost as would typically be the case, is haunted by a pattern; mainly, that of spirals. It is bizarre, and though it has numerous characters it really follows Kirie Goshima and her boyfriend as they confront the many things caused by this haunting. From characters becoming obsessed with spirals to metamorphosis, ‘Uzumaki’ contains a lot of different stories featuring many different events. What is more impressive ist he way the theme of spirals makes its appearance in every chapter. Ito manages to pull through the idea of a pattern haunting a town amazingly well, and it manages to become incredibly creepy and understandable very fast. Spirals seem to be everywhere and affecting everything, and the characters are quite quick to catch on.
